Oh Goodie, an oil thread!

Some masters thesis correlating oil threads to cold months. Personally I enjoy them and learn a lot.  They say a lot about us without getting as prickly as religion, gun, or politics threads.  And there's good engineering and physics being shared in a lot of these threads.  And, newer members haven't been through them yet.  (I have Mobil 1 decals lying all around my garage and cabinets but never used any of them when 10w60 was called for, not that it probably would have meant a bit of difference, considering I sold the bikes at low mileage and they didn't spend much time near redline or in extreme conditions.)

Rat540 first posted this article and follow ups on Speed Talk, a forum populated by many professional racer and high performance engine builders. His info was criticized by many because it contradicted what they were seeing on the race track and in real life..Some of his testing methods were known to be outdated and unrealistic...

Just food for thought.. If I have a question on oil, I generally talk to my friend that has worked for companies that sell the additive packages to major oil companies. His knowledge is generally superior to most others. He does run a lot of Mobil one in his rigs, because of the good performance, and value. I also run good quality oil of correct type, and weight the manufacturer calls for. That means in my Air Compressor, Small engines, Cars, and Motorcycles..Keep it clean, and that's enough for long engine life. Rest is voodoo economics...  (IMO)Yes, I will run Motul 300v if the manual call for it.. (goes along with the good quality I look for) I used Mobil one in my Street Triple R because the factory uses it..(At that time) I really do not need to invent the wheel of this stuff, when good quality oil is enough..

Since  ZDDP is such a issue for some..

ALERT!  I just had an issue with the link cited above alerting me that the security certificate for the site has problems, but the alert itself replicated itself & then froze my computer.  Use at your own risk!

In addition, I'm no oil expert myself, but the site seemed a bit "iffy", too.  I'm automatically skeptical when an article promotes itself as the ONLY answer to an issue, & that all others are ignorant of "the truth".

Most folks into outdoor sports have heard of George Herter, the founder of the "Herter's" outdoor equipment and sports dynasty.

He wrote a book called "The Bull Cook", meant to be a history of the cuisinary arts, and a guide to proper cooking today based on that.

The book reads very much like a WG oil thread.   Everything is presented as "This is the way it is.   No one else has ever published the proper way to do this.   And if you believe anything else, you're just a fool like the rest and will never get it right.   Now listen to me ...."

It's hilarious, without really meaning to be.   ON the other hand, it really does have some great recipes and techniques in amongst the potted histories and bogus folk etymologies, you just have to pick and choose.   So again, very much like an oil thread!
