FYI,

Just in case that some of you guys use Mobil 1's 20W50 V-Twin Motorcycle Synthetic Oil in your bikes engine, I just bought 36 quarts (I have 4 MG's (3 x 1100 Sport and 1 x 85 LeMans IV), which I'm all switching over to this oil now) from PepBoys. Their current "On Sale with free shipping" cost on their online website or via PepBoy's eBay store is $7.69 per qt.

I thought that this is a pretty good deal, since I just paid $10.00 x 5 bottles yesterday a Walmart for the same oil.

That's designed as a "wet-clutch" synthetic motorcycle oil, isn't it?

Doesn't sound like what you'd want to put in a Guzzi to save a few cents.   Despite the rousing recommendation, I believe I'll stick with the oils designed for my engine.

Yes, thanks for the heads-up.  I did learn many years ago to not use synthetics like Mobil 1in engines that aren't perfectly sealed.  My Mille doesn't drip oil anywhere, but there are a couple areas on the engine that get an slight oily film on them after a while.  I'd bet that if I put Mobil 1 in it, the slight seepage would become drips.

I've run it in my 1991 Airhead (BMW - dry clutch) for the past several years.  Seems fine.  Probably better than the BMW branded oil I started with in the early 1990s. Also in my 2003 Bonneville for 45,000 miles (wet clutch.) No adverse issues.  However, I drink the Guzzi Kool Aid when it comes to oil for the 1200 Sport.  It's Agip 10w60 4T Racing Oil.  That lump of an engine probably wouldn't know the difference between Agip and another brand of 10w60, but taking no chances.  There .... I've done it.  My first contribution to an oil thread.

(Sorry .... my response is merely anecdotal.)

lots of ZDDP in it, like 1800 ppm.

don't ask how I know that .... you'll know if you're on the V11/LM thang.

I have a 07 Calvin and haven't had to change oil I'm it yet. I was thinking of using the Mobil 15-50 synthetic which can be got at Walmart very reasonable. Would the oil in this thread be a better choice of the two or stick with the high dollar 10-60 recommend by quzzi. Sorry for the oil question but I didn't start it :)

If you buy the 15w50 at WM, be sure it's the older blend with the gray cap on the bottle.  It's recommended by Mobil-1 for older cars and has more ZDDP than the other current motor oils.

However, the V-Twin oil has a lot more ZDDP in it, which is good for our solid lifter Guzzis.

We've discussed this ad-nauseum and previous threads have links to Mobil-1's website, so I'm not going to do it here.

Well, their ads specify that it is made especially for motorcycles that share oil with the clutch, so as to not make the clutch slippery.

See, our Guzzis DON'T have wet clutches, so that's what I was going by ...

Modern era synthetics do not leak past seals any more so than dyno oil.  Many years ago it was an issue do to the chemical make up of the oils, not as widely thought, that they were to slippery.   I have run full ester snythetics in many motors for the 60s, 70s and 80, and not one started to leak where it hadn't before.

Good to know, thanks.  My experience is from the '80s, when  car engine I had leaked like a sieve with Mobil 1, and not a drop with Castrol, Valvoline, etc..

Lannis

Lannis,

oil not designed for use in a wet clutch engine can f-up the clutch in a wet clutch machine.

oil designed for use in a wet clutch engine will work perfectly in a dry clutch machine.

there are several things that make the Mobil-1 V-twin a good oil for our Guzzis.  Chief among them is the ZDDP at 1750 ppm.  The 15w50 has ZDDP at 1300 ppm.

Here's their chart:  https://mobiloil.com/~/media/amer/us/pvl/files/pdfs/mobil-1-oil-product-specs-guide-2016.pdf

I probably should had included the Mobil 1 web info, which explains which synthetic oil could be use in a dry or wet clutch engine....

But yes, if in doubt, please go on the official Mobil Oil website, and they explain the differences between the oils pretty good. And yes, from what I have read online, the 20W50 V-Twin Synthetic oil was designed for dry clutch V-Twin Harley Davidson engines.

This is the oil to use for wet-clutch engines:

And this is the oil which Mobil 1 states would work great in V-Twin dry clutch engines.

Mobil 1, 20-50W.  No such animal out here.  The other weights are available but too light.  I use Castrol or Valvoline with API matching alphabet code for compatible oils.
