I'm not including the cost of the vacuum brake line bleeder I needed to get all of the air out of the new caliper ($42.79), because that's a tool. I'm not complaining, I learned how to be more careful, and I doubt I'll make that mistake again.
With the rear brake the Italians in their infinite wisdom put the bleed screw on the bottom. I took the caliper off, turned it upside down and it bleeds just fine. Once the air is out it is no problem to flush new fluid through, just don't run out of fluid and introduce air in the line.Saves the need for a vacuum brake bleeder.
Didn't work for me. Starting with a dry caliper, no amount of turning, twisting, shaking, and thumping got all of the air out. Once I hooked up the vacuum bleeder, no sweat. My half-baked theory is that trying to bleed with pressure moved the pistons outward and air was trapped behind them. With vacuum, the pistons are withdrawn fully and there's no place for air bubbles to hide, so they get flushed out.
