I can't believe manly men who ride fire breathing machines are discussing a dramatic female pop performer...    I see it as "art" having sexual overtones ...Being a teen or young adult is all about hormonal drive and that's the message in her songs and performances...

The Guzzi and the Gretsch are the only things worth a damn in that video.

Well, I think she's a little deeper than that. For sure, she *is* a major talent, whether you like her or not. She can do about any musical idiom, and do it very well. I thought the SB show was one of the best of the last few years. <shrug>

Like her or not she has one hell of a set of pipes. Any singer that can jam with Tony Bennett is no slouch at the craft. The video reminds me of back in the day when MTV was Music Television. Fun times  :thumb:

Agreed .......... I am so glad I don't have a daughter.

The guys who are all "Oh I love this stuff" wouldn't want their daughters emulating these "strong women" either, I suspect.   I hope.

I have to agree with Kev M on this one. I had always written Lady Gaga off,due to her outlandish costumes and figured she was just another superficial plastic pop star.

After listening to her closely doing a couple of interviews, for a young lady in her position in a brutal industry, she sounds like she's got her sh*t together, jmho.

Well I have a problem with the mysoginist aspect of the very term "slut culture". It's about as one-sided as "rape culture."

That said you clearly included this video and more broadly Lady Gaga with the equally unfair characterization "these bimbos are promoting" and "bad role models".

I think it's unfair to include her in this.

I can't see how she's a bad role model for strong women.

No, what's clear here is that you're rewriting my comment and bashing me for what you've twisted it into.  I'm not going to persue this with you.

I still like watching her show her assets.  She is making the most of it while she is still young and hot.  Once she get old with cellulite, she will have to live off of her investments.  Those are not nearly as attractive.

I've also seen her perform with Elton John, both playing and singing together. Obviously both talented and respected.

RK, I'm sorry if I'm misinterpreting your words, that's not my intent. I'll drop it too.

you must be kidding. Janice and Grace were unabashed about sex and sang 4 letter lyrics frequently.  Grace also posed for nude photos.

But neither could dance or perform with the talent of Gaga.  Janice was a blues singer and Grace was folk singer, they turned to rock & roll.

Gaga is multi talented writer, singer, dancer and performer.

I like all 3 but I can't say I agree with the implication about skin and sexuality.  Janice and Grace were much more scandalous for the time.

Lady Gaga had an interesting early on. This is from Wiki:
Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta[2] was born on March 28, 1986, at the Lenox Hill Hospital on Manhattan's Upper East Side[3] to a Catholic family.[4] She is the elder daughter of Cynthia Louise "Cindy" (Bissett) and Internet entrepreneur Joseph "Joe" Germanotta.[2][5][6] She continues to practice Catholicism.[7][8] Gaga is of 75 percent Italian descent, and also has French Canadian ancestry.[9][10][11] Gaga's sister Natali is a fashion student.[12] Despite her affluent upbringing on Manhattan's Upper West Side, she says that her parents "both came from lower-class families, so we've worked for everything—my mother worked eight to eight out of the house, in telecommunications, and so did my father."[13][14] From age eleven, she attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart, a private, all-girls Roman Catholic school on Manhattan's Upper East Side.[15][16][17] She described her academic life in high school as "very dedicated, very studious, very disciplined" but also "a bit insecure". "I used to get made fun of for being either too provocative or too eccentric, so I started to tone it down. I didn't fit in, and I felt like a freak."[18] In 2014 Gaga said she was raped at the age of 19. She stated, "I went through some horrific things that I'm able to laugh [at] now, because I've gone through a lot of mental and physical therapy and emotional therapy to heal over the years".[19] Gaga later said that she suffers from posttraumatic stress disorder because of the rape, and that support from doctors, family, and friends "really saved my life".[20]

"It is a daily effort for me ... to regulate my nervous system so that I don’t panic over circumstances that to many would seem like normal life situations. Examples are leaving the house or being touched by strangers who simply want to share their enthusiasm for my music".[21]
—Gaga on her struggle with PTSD

Gaga began playing the piano at the age of four, wrote her first piano ballad at thirteen, and started to perform at open mic nights by the age of fourteen.[22] She performed lead roles in high school productions, including Adelaide in Guys and Dolls and Philia in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.[23] She also appeared in a very small role as a mischievous classmate in the television drama series The Sopranos in a 2001 episode titled "The Telltale Moozadell". She auditioned for New York shows without success.[13][24] She also studied method acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute for ten years.[25][26] After high school, her mother encouraged her to apply for the Collaborative Arts Project 21 (CAP21), a musical theater training conservatory at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.[13] One of 20 students to gain early admission, she, aged 17, lived in an NYU dorm on 11th Street.[23] In addition to sharpening her songwriting skills, she composed essays and analytical papers on art, religion, social issues, and politics, including a thesis on pop artists Spencer Tunick and Damien Hirst.[27][28] She also auditioned for various roles and won the part of an unsuspecting diner customer for MTV's Boiling Points, a prank reality television show.[13][29]

Guess we all have different outlooks on life. If I had a daughter that had performed that show dressed in the same kind of costuming at a Super Bowl I would have been Damn proud of her. It's performing arts, not a morals show.

I don't remember.   I was just thinking, though, how silly (foolish?) is it to be sitting around in the middle of winter saying "This woman is really talented and looks good" and someone else says "I don't think so, I don't like her singing and she acts like a slut" and someone else saying "No she isn't, and you must be stupid or something" and someone else says "She's a wonderful, powerful woman" and someone else says "I think So and So is better" and someone else says "No they're not".

Like there's some objective measure of talent, beauty, other than one's testicles when it comes to that subject ....

Yeah, it would suck if one of my daughters was:

* happy with herself
* dedicated enough to pursue something with such passion
* successful enough to be outspoken in her beliefs
* kind and generous enough to co-found and sponsor countless charities
* talented enough to enjoy the adoration of millions of fans
* yet still love her parents enough to give them a shout out live while performing for some 30M viewers at the super bowl

FWIW, I see her work as playing with the reflexive power and danger that comes from female sexuality.  I could be just projecting how I've seen Madonna's work, since I see them as in the same tradition and LG hasn't interested me musically.  Her history of trauma adds the intensity and pain to the performances.  Both LG and Madonna unleashed the tiger and rode it for their own ends rather than succumb to it like has happened to so many.  I did say, FWIW!
