Dart Flyscreen question for V7
« on: February 15, 2017, 06:36:55 PM »
I know there has been a lot of discussion about flyscreens for the V7 on the forum and was wondering how those who have purchased one like it. Does the mounting system work well?

I am looking at purchasing a Marlin for my V7 stone as I like the looks & price better than the Guzzi OEM flyscreen.

I have one on a LMIII. It bolts to either side of the headlight. Easy peasy

Dart Flyscreens are probably one of the best quality flyscreens that you can get, I've tried a couple of different brands over the years. The screen is thick and it doesn't flex in the wind at any speed. The hardware is top quality. I put one on my Bonneville in 2013 and recently one on my 16 Griso (the classic screen). They block some wind pressure off the chest/torso area which helps with fatigue on long trips. They don't do much from the neck up, but they do offer protection for the gauges. Dart offers them in 3 colors, clear, tinted and opaque, the opaque is the darkest tint. If you ever need to order just the screen for some reason, they will sell the replacement screen without the hardware at a very reasonable cost. They ship pretty fast, I ordered both of mine directly from Dart in the UK and they arrived at my home in the US within 7 days.

Nice looking bikes! I think I am going to go ahead and order the Marlin for my V7. They show a light tint, dark tint and midnight tint. I will probably go with what they list as dark tint.

I've got the Classic model on my Bonneville. Unlike the National Flyscreen that it replaced, it has a stop incorporated into the mounts that prevents the rotation of the headlight. Well designed and executed; it works just as zebraranger reported above. With a full faced helmet, it makes your bike work better for longer days. Highly recommended...

love mine. heads up, the opaque one is just that, solid black. the 2nd darkest shade is what I have (* see pics).

i used to get covered in dead bugs on rides prior to mounting it. cut down on that drastically.

Without a windshield, and for being a bit taller in my upper body than in my legs, at highway speeds the windblast had me holding onto the bars of my V7II Stone with an iron grip, I was a parachute.  I installed the Dart Marlin and the windblast was moved to my upper chest.  The airflow is clean and with really insignificant buffeting of any kind.  It's a quick and easy installation, but follow the directions step by step.  Make sure the angle of your headlight doesn't rise or fall.  Mine went up a degree or two and I was blinding the world.  I loosened the bolts and brought it back down to normal.  Easy peasy!.  It is very high quality and looks great.

I just checked the Dart website quickly and did not see a Piranha model mentioned, unless I missed it.

I've had both the Classic and Marlin Dart screens on my V7 and V7II.  They're both excellently made and do the job they're designed to do.  I eventually switched to the Moto Guzzi screen because it's a hair bigger.  I still have a Marlin light tint screen in excellent condition, which I'm planning to list soon in the Swap Meet section, but if anyone is interested now, you can PM me.  My price is $110 including shipping to CONUS.  Sorry for posting spam here.

I've used both the Classic and, currently, the Marlin on my 13 V7 Stone.

They are both excellent built quality and fitting as others have noted.

The difference between them though might not just be physical size as the Marlin is larger, but curved more so seems to funnel air at a point in height above it.

How you feel about each will probably vary with your own height, and your distance from the shield (how long are your arms, how much do you lean, do you have the standard Stone/Special controls or the Racer rearsets etc.).

For my use (5' 10", Stone, standard controls) I think I prefer the Marlin overall, but sometimes I wonder if the funneled air makes my open face less comfortable during a long day in the saddle (and I wonder if I should wear a FF more often on longer trips).

I am only 5' 6" and have the standard controls. My arms are on the short side so I do lean in a little.  Taking that into consideration I think I am still going to go with the Marlin screen.

The closer you are to the screen (both vertically and horizontally) the more air either will divert, however there is a point, that maybe is between my chest and the top of my helmet that gets what feel like more air than it would without a screen at all (that funnel effect).

I'm 5'8" and wear shirts with a 32-33" sleeve.  I have a Marlin on my V7II Special.  Great quality, easy to install, good looks, and it made a noticeable difference in the wind hitting my chest.  Two thumbs up.

Good points and you're exactly right. On my 13 Bonneville I sat more upright and the Classic screen was more angled rearward which caused the wind pressure to hit me a little lower towards the torso. When I put a Classic screen on my 16 Griso, I lean more forward and the screen is more upright causing no wind pressure on the torso, but it has moved up a little higher to the helmet area. Also the screens are non-adjustable, so the brackets angle are different based on bike Mfg and model. You can see the different screen angles in my photo's between the Bonneville and the Griso with the Griso screen being more upright.

Just wanted to let you know that the Cobra and Spitfire screens form Slipstreamer both will fit your V7 and both look good as well. I have one of each, as one screen is a bit taller than the other and makes the brutal winter riding an AZ more tolerable. It is tough riding around when it is 52 degrees

I like that once it is set up right, I can take it on and off in less than a minute. Anyway, just another option, and depending on your budget, it might help? I have also used a Dart screen in a different set up and it was definitely a quality product.

Well I ordered a Dart Marlin screen in a dark tint and also ordered some 1200 sport mirrors to replace the stock V7 mirrors that came on the bike.

Thanks I will. I got the idea for mirrors from a thread you started.

I thought about the opaque, but decided on the dark tint. I prefer to be able to see through the screen.

Post pics and impressions once you get and install it please.

Had a classic screen on mine, but haven't noticed that much difference and didn't like the looks of it.

I thought the dark tint WAS the opaque one (of the two options) is there a third option now?

I had the one you could see through when it was the Classic, but man the bugs looked 10 times worse.

The Marlin hides them much better.

Then again after seeing how much damage the bug juice can do over time on one of our older Harley shields I started using Plexus at the end of EVERY day... yup HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? Well, it happened when I bought a tall shield that's mostly clear to see through for the Harley.  :embarrassed:   :embarrassed:

Dart lists a light tint, dark tint and a midnight tint. I am assuming the midnight tint is the opaque.
Since you can buy replacement screens I figure I can order the midnight tint replacement screen.

INTERESTING, I'm not sure they had "midnight" when I got my Marlin. I THINK it was just Light and Dark then. Unless what I have is Midnight and the Dark tint was the new one and was introduced in between.

Guess I should check out their website again.

<shrugs>

EDIT - ok, looking at the website, I THINK mine is "Dark Tint" and the Midnight was added after. I think I probably would have chosen midnight, but the dark tint works well. I know I CAN see through it, but it's not like I'm ever crouched over that much that it matters.

Fortunately, when I had my cataracts removed, I asked for artificial lenses set for distance focus, and now I ride without glasses, so I never see close enough to notice the bug spots on my windshield.

Unfortunately I am not usually at a high enough speed (around town) and bugs just suffer a minor concussion.

I know what you mean about not being crouched over that much that it matters if you can see through it, but I though the dark tint looked pretty good and figure if I change my mind later I can just order a midnight black replacement screen.
