V7 II Transmission fluid
« on: February 19, 2017, 09:52:12 AM »
Only have 300 miles on the bike and still getting acquainted.
Engine oil easy to check via dipstick
Hub easy to check via middle plug

Not finding any info for checking the 6 speed trans fluid.
Opening fill plug, I can see fluid....way down at the bottom.
Is there a screen in the trans drain?

Oil filter   27153085
Engine oil   10W60   2 liters
Trans oil   85W90   500 cc
Hub oil   85W140   170 cc

There is indeed a screen in the "transmission" drain.  Actually, it's separate from the drain plug but it can be pulled out and inspected after the plug is removed.

As you are possibly a new Moto Guzzi owner, you should be aware that Moto Guzzi uses the term "transmission" for the rear, final, bevel drive and uses the term "gearbox" for what most of us are used to calling the transmission. This nomenclature causes endless confusion and occasional disaster, for example, when someone (including mechanics) puts only 170 mL of the wrong oil into the gearbox.

There's really no good way to check the oil level in the gearbox except by draining it and measuring what came out.  On the other hand, there's no reason to ever check the level if it's been properly filled.  Also, the recommended gearbox oil change interval is 60,000 km, or about 36,000 mi.  When you do drain the oil, make sure the filler cap is also removed, otherwise the oil has a hard time draining out.

Have fun with your new V7II.

I haven't inspected one of the new gearboxes up close yet. Would there be any way to fashion a small dipstick to satisfy curiosity?

Thanks for the nomenclature education!

Need to pull the plug, again.
Don't know if I can get a straw to the bottom, or not.
If I can, I would still need to know the normal fluid height.
Will check, when I catch up.

Will see if I can get a straw to the bottom.   If so, would need nominal height from bottom.

On my way home from my 1st service I stopped in the 1st layby and checked there was at least some oil in the gearbox using a plastic tie wrap. If you do this don't do anything to move the gearbox as the tie wrap could be trapped between gears as it is not designed for a dip stick. Steve.

Good info.
Typical 7 or 8 inch tie wrap?
Any idea how far up the tie wrap and was it all the way to the bottom?

I would not rely on the dip stick idea because I'm pretty sure oil from gears would mark the tie wrap as it threaded it's way to the bottom giving a false reading. I just made sure there was some in until I got home, I have since changed the oil and made sure of the right quantity. Steve.

I'm thinking if there was a practical way to check level they would have incorporated it.

If the wire tie dipstick gives you warm and fuzzies by occasionally confirming oil is in it, go for it.

But I don't periodically check any of my transmissions or rear/differential housings as long as they are not leaking.

How about if the trans vent puked 1/2 ounce or so?   Just enough to mark its territory.

1/2 ounce?

Are you sure it's actually a half ounce?

I mean a half ounce of oil would make a huge mess.

But even if I'd be more concerned why it would burp that much?

Of course if it was overfilled that would do it.

So if it stops now I'd not worry.

1/4 ounce?
1/8 ounce?
Dunno, but enough to leave several streaks and require a few shots of brake cleaner.

It was after a interstate run, on and off the throttle, but always under the max RPM break-in limit.

Taking it 80 miles to Overton vis North Shore3 around Lake Mead and back on Saturday and again on Mar 3.   Then it will be at or past the 650 mile mark first fluids change and valve adjustment.

I am considering having the dealer do it, but the price is a stumbling block.   I am retiring next week and trying to live within a budget.

However, I figure that if the dealer does the first service, they will know the bike has been properly serviced, should a warranty issue arise.

Besides, I prefer handling electrical over fluids and valve adjustments, albeit much simpler than on a CB750F!
