V7 II usable fuel capacity
« on: February 19, 2017, 09:56:33 AM »
Owner's manual advises 5.5 gallons capacity...0.5 gallon better than my CB750F!

How much is usable?   What is the most anyone has added?

Re comparison to Honda CB750F, it would get about 38 MPG, whereas the V7 I is rated 56 MPG, and I am getting 48-50 on break-in.

Love the longer range, as I like long day trips.

Will be off the grid in northern Arizona until Wednesday.   TIA for any replies.

(2013 V7Special) MPG depends on my throttle hand. I have never bothered to track how much I put in a tank...
Without trying to extract the last usable drop of fuel I reach about 400km per fill. After that I want off for a break.
Guess work says about 5 litres per 100 at legal speeds ~ 50 mpg on a bike that has 25000km.
Normal touring speed is sub 130km. Altitude 600 - 1000 meters. Temps -5 to 25C.
One may write one's destiny but the unknown delivers it.

I also don't keep track of how much goes in my V7II's tank.  I fill my tank with the bike on the side stand, so I put in less than if I had (and used) a center stand.  I've gotten as much as 245 mi before the next fill.  It seems to me that how much you can get out of the tank could depend partially on how you ride, since there's no mechanism to get fuel from the right side of the tank to the left side, where the fuel pump intake is located, except by sloshing from one side to the other.  With a rock steady speed on a glassy smooth road, I would guess that there would be more fuel left on the right side of the tank when you run out of fuel than there would be when you thrash the bike on bumpy, winding roads.

In my case, my butt always needs a fresh supply of blood before I need to refuel.

I think he's asking what's the usable fuel capacity.

I think I've heard of some stuttering by 5.0g but I'm sure I've put in 5.something (maybe 5.2) at least once.

But I usually give up by 4.8g.

Since my light comes on at 4.0g these days and I get better then 50 mpg, by 4.8 I'm above 250 miles.

The metal tanks were supposed to be rated at 22L, of which 21L is usable. I have only just installed at metal tank on the V7C, and put in 21.28L (on the centre stand, and not spilling over the top. It's early days yet, but it looks as if the low fuel light is coming on somewhere between 7 & 9L remaining.

Based on my own careful testing of a '13 Stone, I've got 5.2 'Merican gallons before engine dies.  That's with bike vertical and no heroics leaning bike over to get another pint toward fuel pick-up.

On my regular commute with known gas stations, I routinely fill up with 4.6 to 4.8g.

I am afflicted with a medical condition known as CRWSS, otherwise known as Chronic Right Wrist Spasm Syndrome.   On account of my medical issues, I normal get 41-43 mpg.

I think he's asking what's the usable fuel capacity.

Thanks, Kevin.
I was guessing about 0.5 gallon may slosh in the tank, but the fuel pump could be sucking air.
If so, that would be 5.0 usable gallons.

If it can use 5.2, before sucking air, as SmithSwede commented and if it actually holds 5.5, then only 0.3 would be left in the tank.

On my `04 750 Breva w/a 4.7 gal. gas tank I found with the fuel pump in it all I got was 4.0 gal. to the motor any time I rode it the long way.  Therefore on any trip I carry a 1 gal. plastic can extra out here in the West because we have some wide open spaces between gas stations.  Many a time that extra gas has come in handy.    Normally I get 50 mpg on that bike.

Funny thing is my CX100 (949cc) get's 50-55 mpg at the same speeds.

WAIT, when did they change the STATED capacity from 5.8 to 5.5? And is there any reason not to believe the 5.2 that a few of us have seemed to manage on the earlier V7 I <--- guess that's what we should start calling the early 1TB models. I mean, did they actually may a change to the tank? That would seem unlikely.

At the end of the day I bet 5.0 is safe with a cushion.

Or like me, learn exactly when the low fuel light comes on and calculate your own cushion afterwards.

For me it's dead simple since it comes on a 4.0, I divide mileage by 4 in my head and I know exactly what I'm currently averaging, and since I know I have at least a gallon left I can use that average to determine how much further I can risk it.

A quart or 2 of TruFuel has been handy in Nevada.   See post one of this thread:  http://xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/showthread.php?t=2003752&page=4

That's the way I do it.  Fuel economy can vary quite a bit with speed/load/wind conditions.

When the low fuel light comes on, I make the quick calculation and start planning for the fuel stop.

Check out Fuelly.com where a number of riders have been recording their consumption:

http://www.fuelly.com/motorcycle/moto_guzzi/v7_ii_stone/all

I've got it on my phone and enter the data in right at the gas station, super easy and I'm averaging 47.5mpg.  Temperature, city/highway, throttle all have significant influence on your results.

My worst so far has been 48.
Previous bikes have been predictable, depending on speed.

My question was how much fuel is usable until it is dry/sucking air/time to push (or pour in TruFuel).

Thus far, there may be 5.2 gallons usable in the 5.5 gallon tank (5.547613, if it is truly a 21 liter tank)

I am generally frugal, but $5 a quart was still cheaper than buying a 30 ounce MSR tank!

I have to make a point here. The V7 has a lot more fuel range than all the other retro styled bikes. Also I have to add that the on road performance of these little Guzzi's is impressive.

As I said, early days. I will run it dry just to see how far I get, but so far I have run 100km with the low fuel light on, and then only 17.35 litres (4.6 gal) fitted in. It's looking like you can ride 4 hours straight before thinking about looking for more fuel. Like that.

Malik, I'm a little confused.

What year/model are you talking about?

Because multiple of us have gone well beyond 4.6 US gal, as in 5.0-5.2g at least on 2013-14 1TB V7I models.
