no tail-light, tach or speedo light 1998 EV 1100
« on: March 17, 2017, 12:24:37 AM »
Hi,

On my way home from working tonight I found I had no tail-light on my 1998 EV 1100 (brake light would work) as well as no tach, speedo and no signals. Being it's past midnight I haven't had a chance to investigate. Any ideas?

Thanks

BTW, I did have the headlamp off this past week to install a new bulb.

Without knowing which bike I'd say check the fuse.

Hi,

Does the bike still have the original relays?

19 year old motorcycle.  May be worth the $20 and get a new set (6) of relays.

Check out dpguzzi.com

Hope this helps.

After the previously mentioned relays, a known trouble spot, the tail light assembly is another trouble spot. Look for melted contact support on the sockets

Check the ignition switch. Just had the same on a Centauro.

Check Fuse 4, if it's ok but you have no Voltage at the fuse holder with the key on look at the ignition switch (broken wire) or the light switch (39). (Carl shows two options with and without a switch)
Two Phillips screws from under hold the switch on, the wires sometimes snap from constant flexing.

If the fuse is popped possibly an intermittent short in the tail light area, the easiest way to find that is to substitute the fuse with a headlight bulb while you wiggle the wires, it will flash to indicate when the short is on.
I use a headlight bulb with a couple of wires soldered on so both filaments come on together, this will supply about 5 Amps and stay dark.

If I remember right, there is one fuse that handles that circuit. Check the fuses.

It'll take 10 seconds to check out fuse 4  but you're right. If it's blown, you'll need to find out why, not just replace it and consider it fixed.

Had that happen once, wire to tach light fell off connection and shorted to the tach chrome
Cover. Took a couple hours to find it. Good luck

update...a few weeks back I had my headlight off. I purchased a OEM Cali-sport shield to replace the barn door that was on my EV. I could not be happier with the shield except the headlight was illuminating the shield. So i took the headlight lens off  (discounted the 3 prong light and 2 other separate wires connectors)and installed a headlamp visor. Illumination solved! Rode the bike during the day and no problem till later that evening when I note no tail, dash or signal lights.

Fuse 4 was blown so I replaced and it blew again. I went right away to the last thing I did to the bike (as above). I reversed the two separate wire connectors and fuse. Problems solved!

Just be happy it was not the ignition switch. That was my Centauro that Dave Blue mentioned.
