Made my second trip to El Mirage this past weekend. With a bit of luck (high tail winds, and bar set low to set record), I set a land speed record in the 1000cc M-PG class. My speed was 136.3.

Thanks Mike, that is impressive, I want to ask: how much is left to squeeze out?

Honestly, I had a 17 MPH tailwind that was about 45 degrees off axis. While I can always hone technique, I doubt there is much more to be had out what was a roadrace motor. My bike was dyno'd at 71 HP at 7400 RPM (incredible torque). I assume 9% loss for altitude, and your left with 64 horses. Given I'm in the no streamlining class, I doubt much over 135 with no wind would be possible. I was geared too tall, so with some slightly shorter gears, I could possibly go faster. I could also clean up the aerodynamics of my bike without violating class rules. This is a soft science, repeatability is the key. I now have two weekends with two different gearings. I've had 3 runs, 115, 129 and 136. I like that trend, and would love to go 140 with this bike as that is what it was clocked at, at Daytona by AMA radar. Right now I have a huge 100mm tach that I could pull, but then I'd lose information. I also have a sidestand on the bike which I could pull, but I like the convenience. Now that I have a title, I don't really need to chase that. Simply running is enough fun for me... That said, I would like to have a 85 HP motor... Mike Rich?

Thank you!  As I mentioned Saturday, I last saw the bike at Nelson Ledges in '92 (I think).  It made a lasting impression, and is a big reason why I have a Guzzi today.

That sure reminds me a lot of the race bike that Eric Philippe at Midway Cycles built!

Congratulations Mike.  That was quite a jump in performance in two outings.  Way to go and that motor sounds great.

With no wind ,about 130 MPH sounds correct for 60 ish HP on a wide frontal area bike like a Guzzi... My Triumph in 650 MPG class runs 130 mph in the 1-1/2 mile with about 55 rear wheel HP.. That's in Maine at about 800 ft elevation and high humidity...
I found the fastest speeds came from gearing the bike for about 500 rpm less than peak power at the "target" speed..
Riding position is very important on a naked bike...The rider's back needs to be horizontal and ideal is the helmet slight lower than the ass.....You got to get rid the beautiful fuel tank and install something that allows a lower riding position.
But... you set a record and that's all that matters !!!

Had my 3rd weekend of racing at El Mirage this past weekend. Up until this point, I had made a total of 3 runs, 2 my first weekend, and 1 last month at my 2nd event. For this event I managed to squeeze in 3 runs, doubling my total, all before 1pm. It was brutally hot, 105 degrees, with no to little wind. Here is my race report...

First off as you may remember, last month I set the record for the M-PG 1000 class on my 1975 850-T (992 cc) at 136.3  MPH, while only pulling 7000 RPM. I knew I was geared too tall, but I needed a data point being too tall, all my previous runs I had been too short. That run I made with a standard wide ratio helical cut gear 5 speed from most any 70's or 80's Guzzi mated to a 8:33 rear drive and with a 100/90x18 rear tire. In impound (still talking last month), while pulling the head for inspection of my CC's, I noticed the plugs looked lean. Fast forward to this month. I decided to shorten up my gearing. Not having any 5 speed options between the 8:33/100 and my 7:33/120, I decided to use a 9:34 convert gear set, but only use it as a 4 speed. This had the added benefit of reducing the number of shifts I had to make, a boon given my dodgy ankle. I also went up in the jets one step (152 to 155). Oddly enough, this is exactly what I used to run with this motor 25 years ago. I had leaned it one step for elevation before the season started. So to the racing...

First run, everything seemed great, I got her up into 4th gear, and she would only pull 7000 RPM. WTF! I was so rattled, I shifted into 5th which was a big mistake, and she immediately bogged to 6200 RPM, and I ran 131.9, 4.4 MPH less than my record. Convinced my gearing was right, plus, not wanting to have to switch rear drive units in 105 degree heat, I put my jets back to where they had been. 2nd run, felt good, pulled to 7750 RPM in 4th and I held it. Speed, 141.693, almost 10 MPH faster than the morning, and 5.4 faster than the record. A side benefit of using the 4 speed option, I get into top gear earlier, and I have more time to work on my "trim". Tucking in, getting elbows and feet and legs and helmet, just so. Had to go to record certification impound, only this time since I had them seal my motor last month, I did not have to pull the cylinder head. Got out of impound, and got in line for a third run. Managed 140.93 at 7700 RPM. Nice to see a backup within 1 MPH.

So my goals for this project, turn my old racer into a LSR bike, go as fast as it had ever gone (it was timed at 140 at AMA Pro-Twins qualifying at Daytona in 1992), set a record in my class, and then beat that own record... have all been done. I don't think there is much more left is this hoary, tired old road racer, but I'm going to continue to try and go faster through some gearing and subtle aero mods, etc.
