TBT - "Throw-Back-Thursday" (GC)
« on: April 20, 2017, 01:36:16 PM »
Feb. 2004 - My old 2002 V11 Le Mans...It was a good Guzzi... :thumb:

I sold it to a friend when I moved to Germany in 2004.   Looking back, I should have taken it with me...but was not sure if I could get it registered / plated, etc. :undecided:

I believe I would have run a little Marvel Mystery Oil through the systems, put some Marine Sta-Bil in the tank, taken out the battery (rather than explode it with a Battery Tender) and had it waiting for me when I came back.

You know how many people would offer to bike-sit that bike for a year or two for you?   I know I would ....

I could fill a page with all the cars and bikes that I should have kept, but then I would need a hanger to live in. The wife would have tossed me. Look at it this way,, it is all traffic under the overpass.

I agree.  Bikes are like traveling for me.  Every place I go or bike I own is an experience, some I would return to, others I wouldn't.  But they are all enjoyable and I would rather visit/own many places/bikes and have those experiences.
I just sold a 2002 Champagne V11 like JJ's there, and it was the best Guzzi of the many I have owned.  But, lacking in comfort for me.  Glad I owned it, but it was time to move on.  Now I am enjoying my first small block!

What I don't miss about my older stuff is all the maintenance. I loved my '60 BMW R60, but it took a great deal of work to keep it reliable. Oil was changed every 1800 miles, generator brushes required periodic dressing, spark plugs every 5000 miles, I had to solder my condensers to the points (I used a heat-sink to prevent burning the condenser), frequent valve adjustments and re-torqueing of the rocker arms, cleaning oil slingers, ad infinitum. Finding parts was no picnic, either. A three day trip to a rally required the better part of a day to prepare and I had to have stockpiled parts on hand or I would have to take the CB750F.

On the other hand, I loved finding complementary notes on my seat and all the attention I received when I rode that old thing...

I guess I never thoughts about bikes I've owned related to travel, but AlanP is correct! :thumb:  I still do a lot of traveling, sadly, and mostly for work, so at the end....it's all just fun and adventure memories...just like motorcycles!

S Dog,

You are entirely right, but.....  I've got a '58 BMW R50.  There is frequent maintenance, but the machine was built/designed to be serviced easily with hand tools.  Unlike modern bikes that require a full Dealer's shop with specialized equipment.
The straightforeward "honest" design of the older BMWs is a joy.  This idea brought me to '09 Guzzi smallblock, which was fairly primitive for it's age.

Yeah, our memories(60's-70's) have rose colored glasses on them.  We forget how much more maintenance we used to have to do with leaded gas, vibrating motors, points, etc. than nowadays.  We mostly remember the good times in our memories.

Or maybe we really WERE having a great time and riding long distances despite the technology, but back then we just weren't such lazy comfort-loving instant-gratification pansies as we've become as we get older.   Since that's certainly true for me, I assume it's true for a few others too ....  :clock:

Yeah, that too.............BTD T on the constant maintenance.  But have to admit switching to Guzzis in the mid80's lowered the maintenance schedule quite a bit for me.  But eventually even Guzzis need some looking at.   Then I got a Suzuki VX800 that spoiled me again as far as routine maintenance.   Except it's valve adjustments are no quicky like on a Guzzi.    Now I'm pretty lazy.  :boxing:

Then there are those of us who have never really been all that "comfortable".  I still rarely run the AC in my car, I'd rather roll down the windows.  I'd rather shift than have an automatic.  I'd rather muscle than have power steering and brakes.  I'd rather row my fishing boat than use a motor.

Still I must admit I'd rather ride my Guzzi than pedal my bicycle 100+ miles a day.  I just don't seem to have the gumption any more.

my best days are when I turn my cell phone off, ride out of range, fly fish a rugged creek where if I get hurt they'll find my remains next year.   I miss the freedom of being left to my own devices.....

The best advice I ever heard from an an 80+ year old motorcycle rider...."Movement!"

Walking, hiking, swimming, bicycling, golfing, motorcycle riding, traveling, whatever!  Just MOVEMENT and any forward moving activities!  :thumb:

Now that you mention it, my car doesn't have power steering or A/C or an automatic either, so that kind of comfort isn't important to me, I suppose.

And I've never bought in to the "cell phone" thing, so I don't have one to turn off.   "They" can't track me with it (whoever 'they' are), people can't reach me with it to say "I haven't heard from you in 45 minutes, I was getting worried" ... if I want technology, I have to come here to my study and turn on the desktop and pootle around, and when I'm done I turn it off and walk away.

I do like hot running water, and not having to drive around shopping for things, and not having to always kill my own meat and grow my own fruits and vegetables so I can eat, so to someone, I'm at some level of "lazy" .... !
