Can I lower the pipes on a V7 2016 racer?
« on: May 09, 2017, 11:27:42 AM »
ok ok ok I know first post here and I bet a bunch of people are going.... wha...?  Why would you buy a bike with distinctive upswept gorgeous pipes and then drop them?  Well here's the thing...  I walked into a MG store last summer to kick some tires and 20 minutes later was arranging delivery of the racer.  I couldn't stop myself, this bike is for me.  In fact, I love it so much I've been riding it every weekend for 2 or 3 day camping trips.  Got some Guzzi Panniers, but they are only 20 litres and don't really suite the bike if you ask me, but they fit the pipes perfectly.  I'm planning to ride the bike to Argentina next summer and will definitely need larger panniers.

I really like the GL "Around the world" panniers but at 21" of height I think I'd have to reroute the exhaust straight sideways at foot level or something, and even then they might be too big.  Maybe pelican cases or something, I'm not too sure yet.  Whatever I get has to fit between the bike and the surfboard though:

Although I can extend that if I have to.

Any other suggestions and feedback welcome!  Please go easy on me, I know it's a racer and I absolutely love it as-is, but I will be dead before I sell that bike so it's coming to Argentina with me one way or another.  I should note that to date nothing has been done that can't be undone (the surf rack bolts on to the passenger pegs and frame mount).

Thats going to be close to impossible. Its not the header pipe that has the Up-sweep, its the actual muffler.
YOU might be better off trying to raise the  frame mount for your luggage  or put a soft bag type trunk and tank bag for extra storage

Awesome, thanks for that!  Does that mean a new muffle could change the angle then?

Maybe , The problem is you would have to go try them all  and there is no one place with an assortment of pipes for you.

Why couldn't you just use the exhaust mounts from a Stone or Special? The headers on the Racer could very well be upswept compared to those on the Stone/Special. I'm not sure. Seems pretty doable to me. Start investigating the Stone/Special exhaust, go to a Dealership if nearby and take some measurements. Worst case if you really want it custom built some pipe bender could make you some custom exhaust but then you might also be getting into remapping your fueling.

You'd need to change to the mufflers AND hangers (footpeg mounts) from a Special or Stone.
Then, any luggage made for the Special, Stone, or Classic will fit.

Or, better yet, just do as I did, and just buy a V7 Special or Stone to park along side your Racer

Yeah, I think this is what I need to figure out.  When I put on the passenger pegs I noticed the muffler was hinged.  I'm not even sure it's much more than just re-mounting them lower, presumably where a stone is mounted it will have a mount point (maybe not).  I will undo them tonight and see what's up.

I want a stone so bad.  It's really the right bike for this project, but that will cut into my travel budget way too much  :/

Maybe after I put 100,000 + touring km's on the racer MG will pity me and ship me a stone or even a V9  :D

I know nothing but would bet real money they use the same headers on both bikes..change mufflers sure but building separate components like headers has rarely been done by Guzzi.

Brad is right there. Headers are the same!

man, I can't thank you guys enough for sharing your knowledge and where to get it!

It looks like from those two specs that it's just a case of getting a slightly lower mounting bracket - it goes to the same mount!  This is awesome, thanks again all!

You might check the classifieds both here and the MGNOC web site. Someone may have a set of take off pipes for cheap. Then buy a set of hangars of you have to.

I would have no idea if anything else related to the Racer would interfear.

Good call, thanks!

Yeah, I'm thinking about it.  I wouldn't mind actually a 2-in-1 where it just came straight out the side back under my foot.  I've seen these on other bikes but I looks like there is no muffler and I'm not sure I want to do that to my Guzzi, unless there is an "approved" way of doing that.  It looks like if I don't lower the angle though my bag will get a nice blasting of exhaust like this bike:  http://www.scramblerforum.com/threads/brackets-to-mount-a-saddle-bag-like-this-one.3104/

Listen to Jay (JAS67) he's got BOTH a Special and a Racer in the garage and already told you the differences:

NO.  It's not close to impossible.

Stone/Special mufflers and passenger peg brackets, and call it good...
