Kev, will bring the valve stem seals possibility up to my mechanic and see if anything can /should be done.

Pete, I don't ride her gently. I flog the crap out of her and what my mechanic had said in the past is that if you are riding the bike at high speeds in the highway for an extended period, the bike will tend to burn some oil. As a such, I keep a keen eye on the oil levels every week. Just was not sure if a burn rate of 1 liter over 4000 km was a "normal" burn rate or if there is something else at play. I am willing to live with it as it is but if there is a fix I am not aware of, then would love to have my bike in top performing shape. .

Thanks for the thoughts and comments.

Cheers. Luciano

You don't have to mention anything to your mechanic other than the oil consumption. He knows what to check. Pete may well be right still (he usually is).

I'm w/Chuck! Have done it that way on every new engine I've been exposed to; there have been dozens, from tiny 2 strokes to big, over the road diesels.

This is nearly an oil thread; with engines thrown in for added interest.
What does it mean that there is a gap of ~16 months before restarting?
Apologies, for wasting your time.

And GuzziGal? Looking for an xxx rating? Just sayin' R3~

I've always said that MOST manufacturers check it unscrewed. That said I think my 13 Stone might have been the first Guzzi I've owned that was spec'd that way (unless I'm not remembering my B11 correctly, which is possible, it's been a while).

Not to mention I used aftermarket dipsticks on both the Jackal and B11, and on all 3 I've run the oil about midway on the sticks anyway. Usually cold... Sometimes checked warm.

Just double checked my manual - V7 III is to be checked with the bike upright on both wheels, warm, and with the dip stick "fully tightened".

Hopefully at oil/filter change your verified the oil level position on your dip stick?   My V7 had the incorrect/wrong stick installed from the factory!!!   Indicated HIGHER oil level than it actually was.  I created my own hash marks on the prob so I could see the proper oil level.

On the first oil change on the Breva I measured out the 1.8 lits specified, ran it until warm, then checked it with the dipstick screwed in as specified. It was dead on the "full" mark.

Flukes count I guess. :thumb:

It's really very simple. If it pukes oil into the airbox it's got too much in. Drain out a bit and try again. When it stops puking it out? That's the amount it needs.

Ok, so spoke to the mechanic. He said that given the spark plugs look good, no evidence of burning oil in the exhaust and no oil in the air box, his conclusion is that everything is ok and to not worry. So I won't and I guess will just keep bringing a quart of oil on my road trips. Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. Cheers

Just double checked my manual - V7 III is to be checked with the bike upright on both wheels, warm, and with the dip stick "fully tightened".

Copy and paste from the manual of my 2013 Stone: ENGINE MUST BE WARM TO CHECK OIL LEVEL. THE DIPSTICK MUST BEINSERTED BUT NOT SCREWED IN.
IF YOU CHECK LEVEL WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD, OIL LEVEL COULD TEMPORARILY DROP BELOW THE 'MIN' MARK.

And no, I´m not yelling, the capitals come from the manual. The bike has to be balanced upright also.

A wise move in my book. I don't know about other countries but SG 10w60 is not readily available in your local service station out here. I like topping up (if I ever have to) with the stuff that is in there already.

New engine in the III (2007 and later). I copied from MY manual. I run near the full mark on the dipstick and it's not pumping oil into the airbox. Maybe I'll add a little more (right to the full mark) to see if it burps.
