Beloved Norge is toast
« on: June 04, 2017, 09:56:34 AM »
Earlier in the year I had considered trading in my '09 Norge on a new, leftover 2015 version. After I learned how little I could get for a trade-in, I decided to keep the ole' Fridge; in fact, I set as a goal to put 100,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, on the ride home last night from the Red Mile flat track race in Lexington, KY, we hit a deer when we were going 70 mph on Interstate 75. My wife broke her left radius and ulna, plus has numerous bumps and bruises. I broke no bones, but despite having on an armored jacket, received a lot of road rash; this was complicated by the fact that I take xarelto for a clotting issue; lots of blood oozed out of my limbs.

Though I haven't had a good look at the bike yet, from how it was described to me by folks who towed it, it is certainly totaled, even though it still runs and can be rolled.

True, at times the bike has been a royal pain-in-the-ass. However, it was a spectacular road bike with wonderful character; certainly my favorite bike of all time. I will definitely miss it.

Whew.

Just read that to Kathi, too.

Best wishes from us both to you both for quick return to normalcy.

We love our machines, but they are only metal (and plastic and etc.!).  They matter not a whit.

You and the wife are precious to yourselves and so many others.  Heal soon and well.

Jon, I'm so very sorry to read about your deer encounter.  I'm amazed that deer can run at breakneck speed through a thicket of trees without hitting nary a one, but will run broadside into a motor vehicle.  Anyway, glad you felt well enough to notify us.  Best wishes to both your wife and you for a very quick recovery.

Relieved to hear the injuries weren't worse - both of you, take time to heal properly; it doesn't happen as quickly as it once did.

Sad to hear of the loss of your bike. Most Interstates have deer fencing in many areas, but closer to urban centers and developed areas they tend to rely on the local farms and development to provide that protection.

I hate those deer.   The ones in my freezer can't hit my motorcycle, but they've got lots of buddies who can.

Hitting one at 70 and coming out alive is pretty good luck.   Glad you're both fixable and thinking about the next bike.   As has been said, LOTS of Norges out there and you already know they don't sell for much money .....

Don't like to hear of deer strikes ever. Glad you're mostly ok and you both will heal up. My '09 is almost ready to be for sale. Keep an eye on the classifieds here, maybe the timing and/or desires might work, maybe not. Either way mending is most important. Usually the only way they end up in my freezer is fresh roadkill either by me or others. Still tastes good.
'09 Norge new in '11, sold in '17, 37000 very good miles, thanks to this forum. '17 Roadster new in '17

Good to hear that you and wife survived.  Hope the mending is going well.  The deer is dead right?  Are you retrieving the bike for rebuild or parting out?

Too bad you folks don't hit deer like me....hit them but they get hurt , not me or my bike.

Yeah, your bike is totalled and if you have full coverage you should be able to get it cheap from your insurance co. if you want to even after they settle with you on it's value.  They will auction it off to the highest bidder (if any) and you can have the option to match that price if you want to keep it for parts. BTDT.  Depending on its condition you may have a whole drive train left.
