Stelvio fork...male slider connection to casting.
« on: June 16, 2017, 01:27:23 PM »
On the Stelvio NTX you will find upside down forks.  The male part is attached to a cast fitting which incorporates mounts for brake caliper, axle, and front fender.  The male part appears to be a press fit into said casting.  Am I correct in thinking that it's press fitted?  Guzzi only sells the part as an assembly and when I tried to unscrew the part nothing budged.  My problem is that it is possible to rock the chrome cylinder in that casting, ever so slightly.  I can actually see fluid moving in that joint.  This appears to be the source for the fork oil leaking on that leg.  Unless I am missing something the only solution is a new part....about $460.  Any ideas?  I'm not going to take a chance on a part from a wrecking yard!

Oh, and this means I will not be taking the Stelvio on my 2 week trip starting Sunday.  My trusty V7 get the nod this time.

Peter,

I suggest you PM Mark Elliott (Markcarovilli on this site).  He bought my '12 Stelvio (the cool orange color) and I know he rebuilt the forks last winter.

The castings are apparently threaded on to the bottom of the Staunchion and require some sort of special tool to remove. Beyond that I know nothing because I farm out all my serious suspension work to a specialist who is much more experienced and smarter than me.

Phang, thanks for the video.  We have a different design; no set screw on the stanchion and no holes in the tube to turn the tube.  I'm pretty sure the tube is a press fit not threaded.  Guzzi and Aprilia only sell the tub/stanchion as an assembly.

Chuck, a rebuild does not require taking the tube out of the Stanchion.  I'll PM Mark to see if he discovered a way to take these apart.

my bad, I shouldn't assume it is similar to my Griso SE.

the Showa on the Griso have threaded tube and available separately.

After I sent my last I thought it best to actually take a very close look at the staunchion and tube.  Press fitting seems excessive.  This time I did find a tiny set screw.  Nevertheless, there are no holes to use to turn the tube.  Pete might be correct, some kind of special tool to get this thing apart.  Darned if I can figure out how any tool could grip the tube.  You are lucky to be able to just get the tube by itself.

Get a piece of aluminium bar and turn the centre out to JUST allow the fork to slide in. Then cut a slot in the aluminium bar to allow for contraction when you grip it in a vice. You can the put a suitable bar through the lower axle hole and wind it off. A square aluminium bar will work best. Don't grip the stanchion anywhere that a seal runs.

I use one of these to grip the fork tubes.

Yep, hard to improve on that I reckon. I just tend to go to the shed and do what I know how, but sometimes I'd be better served by researching what's available.
