Manual specs gl4 80/90 for "trans" and
gl5 85/90 for gear box
Now I assume they mean rear bevel gears for line 1 and six speed tranny for line 2
I have read that some use synth 80/90 for both, my dealer uses Silkoline 80/90 for both which is mineral gl5
now my question, I have 5 gallons of Valvoline 75/90 sythpower full synthetic I use for equipment differentials and manual tranny's
It say's it's approved for all gl4 and 5 applications . Will this stuff be ok for the Cali 14 bevel and trans? It also say's it is compatible with non synthetic oils. Been searching the threads for two days without getting too far.
thanks in advance Dave
Your translation of the terms transmission and gearbox are correct - what North Americans call a transmission is a gearbox for a Guzzi translator; a final drive is oddly (at least to us) often called a transmission. Makes me wonder what they'd call a differential.
I own a Norge, but the specs are similar for these lubes. According to the specs, the requirement is for synthetic, not mineral - so I would make a different choice from the one your dealer makes.
I have used a full synthetic 75w90 GL4/GL5 oil from Mobil1 in both areas for as long as I have owned my bike - some 125,000 miles so far. I see no reason why the Valvoline equivalent wouldn't produce equally good results. One thing you may discover is that shift feel is a bit different with the change in oils; if you don't like it, you can always switch to something else.
