Tribute bands
« on: July 15, 2017, 03:28:27 AM »
Yesterday I crossed to the dark side, to Manchester, to see the Bootleg Beatles and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra reproduce Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in its entirety. The evening was hosted by Roger McGough, one of the Liverpool poets of the 1960s, and a member of The Scaffold.
It was a great evening, and made me think that I ought to go and see tribute bands more often. Which ones do you guys recommend?

Recently saw Brit Floyd and all I can say is that they were spectacular!
I think Pink Floyd's catalog lends itself well to a concert and this band was very talented

I'd love to see a XTC tribute band!  Saw a Led Zeppelin tribute a few years back that was spot on, even the singer's voice was reminiscent of the real thing (not quite but close).

Absolutely, positively fantastic show. At least ten people in the band when you could the back up singers and all. Great laser show.  Go see Brit Floyd!

What's a "tribute band"?

Tribute bands are cover bands on steroids.  Not only do they play the music of "their" band, but they go to great lengths to look like the band - same clothing, same on-stage mannerisms, and looks as close to the band members as possible, play the same instruments and use the same equipment if possible.

Take this photo of Generation Idol (Now Idol X) - the guitarist has his nails painted black and is wearing a wig to look as much like Steve Stevens as possible, and the singer (Craig) dresses and looks a good deal like Billy Idol (he's even short like Billy).  His voice is similar to Billy's as well.

And here is Billy and Steve

Cover bands, simply play the music of other bands, and don't worry about being an exact match for them.

Full disclosure - one of my motorcycle riding buddies plays bass for Generation Idol

They did several shows in 2015 and only a couple in 2016 but showed up unannounced a few more times too.

Understood.  Like Elvis impersonators for other acts.  What would E. Sullivan think?

I'll go back to my typewriter now.  I'm writing an email. I'll take it to the post office on Monday.   :cheesy:
