What Motor Oil ?
« on: July 19, 2017, 03:04:17 PM »
I don't have a Guzzi yet.  My Ducatis were unit/shared sump w/ wet clutch.  Used the recommended viscosity of 15W50 in full synthetic and JASO MA compliant.

What does the manual for the Guzzi 8 valve 1200's recommend?  And also, what is popular with you guys?  I'm seeing that the Guzzi's are dry clutch with gear box oil separate, so then is there no issue with using an oil containing friction modifiers (which you can't with wet clutches)?

I have two new sealed 4 liter jugs of JASO MA2 compliant 15W50 full synthetic in the garage left over from the Ducati-- Spectro Platinum 4 and Silkolene Pro 4.  Guessing neither is suitable for the Guzzi 1200 engine . . .

You will find this interesting, they recommend 10-60.
http://www.guzzitek.org/gb/ma_us_uk/1200/Griso1200_8V_072008_Atel(GB).pdf

I use 15-50 fs in my EV and 1100 sport. Someone with a Griso will give you an answer....or 17 answers....as far as brands

Stick to the recommended type and weight and all will be fine. Don't put dino squeezin's in the 8 valve engine, use synthetic.
I order the AGIP direct from Eni but many people use Red Line or any number of other popular motorcycle oils. As long as it meets the spec all is well.
Don't fret over it too much.

Do NOT use a friction modified oil. You will glaze the bores and have oil consumption problems.

Yeah, I use that, Mobil 1, for my EV and Sport 1100, but the 8 valve Griso needs the 10-60

Does Guzzi let you download the owner manuals?

There are scanned copies widely available for almost all models, though Piaggio itself doesn't provide downloadable copies last I checked.

All CARC bikes are specified as needing 10w60 synthetic oil. While some people use other viscosities, some people who do so also report odd things like getting spurious oil pressure warnings or similar annoyances. As to specific brands, there are many, many threads - some of them not even nasty - about people's preferences. Oil selection approaches religious fervor with some people. I am more pragmatic - I just know what I have used and how well it has worked, how easy (or not) it was to obtain, and how much it cost.

Buying by the case is always a good way to do things. Agip/ENI is often available this way, as are ELF/Total and some other brands. I used to use ELF/Total with good success, but my source for case lots dried up and the price got silly.

I base my thoughts on over 125,000 miles and growing  on my Norge (always 10w60 synthetic, brands varied, usually double ester), on over 137,000 miles on my previous V-Strom DL-1000 (that one liked Rotella synthetic 5w40), etc.

Read the ABC letter code for the recommended AGIP oil for the bike and see if it's compatible with the oil for you Ducati.  Best way.

I got a nice letter some while back from ENI saying in as complicated a way as possible that they were no longer selling direct. It went along with the rebranding of AGIP to ENI.
I looked again after posting the other day and the links I used in the past are broken.
Bummer.

I'm pretty sure the 07 had a 2v (per cylinder) engine.

This is rather late but i believe eni north america sells directly to the public on their site. It says nothing about just selling to commercial interests only. Just click the online lubricants store top of the page. Motorcarr is another source both sell by the case. Hope this helps.

The link at ENI North America is https://buyenilubes.com/index.php/shop/motorcycle-engine-oils/eni-i-ride-78.html - currently a case of 12 costs $120, which is fairly reasonable if not actually cheap. At that price I might but there, though it's always nice to be able to buy the LiquiMoly at the local NAPA store.

My pre-Guzzi oil thread resurrected, LoL.

I ended up buying 4 liters of ENI i-Ride PG 10W60 for $51 shipped off eBay from Staccato Motor Sports.  Also went with the default recommended gear oils from ENI. So that's a good price $120/case, if the shipping is free then even better.

Put all three oils in last Wednesday.

At the risk of perpetuating the thread, there are two ENI i-Ride 10W60's, there is the light blue label "PG" and the black label "MotoGP."  Be interesting to know the subtle differences between the two.  On ENI's product data sheet (PDS) for each the 100C viscosity and other numbers are  identical, if memory serves.

:coffee i called eni a few months back to ask about the differences between the gp and the pg oil. The gentleman on the phone looked it up for me and told me there was no difference except the labeling. If you look at the data sheet there is no difference in performance numbers. I have been happy running the 10w60 gp. Bike hasnt exploded and the wear indicators on the plug have improved. I will send for uoa soon hopefully. Af1 also sells the gp in their oil change kit for the guzzi.
