ultra sonic cleaning devices ?
« on: July 29, 2017, 05:27:14 PM »
Harbor freight has one almost big enough ($79).. will it work to clean a crusty old carb nice and clean? right now the choke plunger is stuck, will it free that up?   what type of solvent works best ?

Or, go with vapor blasting? I just found a guy who does that..

I have read on other forums that some swear by a soak in.......Pinesol for carb cleaning. Might be worth a try as it is cheap and easy to do.

Quite a few Dellortos have been through my HF Ultrasonic tank and came out cleaner and better looking. Pinesol works fine. Aqueous automotive shops washer tank stuff works great also

What carb are you working on? I don't want to assume that it's a Dellorto.

Pine Sol works well, but is a fairly thick liquid, so doesn't always go into orifices that need to be cleaned out. It also takes a while, so if you're in a hurry... well, don't be.

Have you tried a good gum cutter such as Berkebile 2+2 Gum Cutter? Super Clean also cuts through gum and "varnish" very well.

To your original question: I have two sizes of ultrasonic cleaners - the "$80" HF unit (I paid $60) and a 5 liter unit. The HF unit actually works better on small parts than the larger one. But, a Dellorto VHB or PHF carb body won't be completely submerged, so I need to turn it. The smaller Mikuni off of a Hodaka I did last week was completely submerged though. I use Purple Power, full strength and it cleans very well.

I bought the small HF unit to see if it was just smoke and mirrors. Surprisingly enough- it works really well.  I have used Berryman Chem-dip (from Walmart). Very, very good cleaner. I'd recommend dunking your whole carb in the gallon can for a good while to soften things up. I do final cleaning in the ultrasonic.

I've used Simple Green, diesel fuel, CLR (calcium lime rust remover), Purple Power, and probably some other stuff in a small ultrasonic cleaner.

For small parts, you can fill plastic bags with solvent and the cleaner with water. Just drop your parts in the baggies, and the baggies in the water. You use very little solvent that way. Plus you can experiment - drop similar parts in bags with different solvents and see how they work. My daughter thought that was a fun science experiment.

I've had a couple of ultrasonics over the years.

First off, for what I've used them for; Firearms, carbs, jewelry and watches, I won't bother with one that does not heat the solution and always prefer the units with variable heat.

As for carbs. At least overbite in a strong pine-sol solution and then the ultrasonic with heated distilled water. It vibrates all the pine-sol loosened gunk & funk, rinses and dries quickly for having been heated.

Best to suspend items rather than dropping to the bottom or even using the mesh baskets that many units have.

I see a lot of these at work. Most are Branson commercial units. Its important to keep whatever fluid you use close to the fill line. If there is no marking on the tank keep it at least 3/4 full. Otherwise you risk damage to the piezo driver.

You might be better off soda blasting the worst of that off, then Pine-Sol or ultrasonic cleaning.

Vapor blasting is the bee's knees...too bad it's so damn expensive.  I saw a demo at the 2016 Norton national rally and was impressed.  The system can be incorporated into a HF blast cabinet but it's still too rich for my blood.  Vapor blast does not peen up the surface like what you get from sand or walnut blasting, just takes the crud off your metal parts.  The end product is darn near perfect.

where do you get it for the HF cabinet? I just got a HF blast cabinet and have been using it to glass bead blast parts, but it is dusty.

A 10liter or larger one will work great for carb sized parts.
I did a Carter AFB carb in one with 50/50 pinesol and water. It is damn amazing how well it came out.

Just don't used ammonia based cleaners in the ultrasonic cleaner, the aluminum parts will turn very dark after a short time (10 minutes will do the damage). I've used regular hand dish soap and it worked very well cleaning burned in gunk and you can let them run longer. It has been a while since I've used one, so go with what others are suggesting as far as products to use go.

For that carb though, I think if you soaked it overnight in this it would likely come out clean a ready for the rebuild.

These things have gotten so cheap in the past 5 years, I paid 4 X that for mine when I bought it back in 2012.

where do you get it for the HF cabinet?

VaporHoning used to offer a kit to convert the HF to vapor blast.  The kit was darn expensive.  As I recall, something on the order of $1K so I passed.  With that said, the results I saw were impressive.

If you do use Pine Sol make sure you rinse them well or they will oxidize.

Can you use a small screw extractor to hopefully grab that small hole in the broken plunger and pull? What did you use to get the carb clean to that point?

Edit, sorry.. quick to reply. I thought the broken part was the plunger. Never mind on the pulling, but would the screw extractor still work maybe?
