Irma will be visiting soon.
« on: September 07, 2017, 08:54:26 AM »
I would like to know who invited Irma to visit. I hope she don't hang around. Getting the exterior of the casa del sol ready today. Food and fuel are stocked as are medical supplies. Generator is good, new blade on the chainsaw tonight, our Kymco scooters are gassed and ready for a post apocalyptic recon to see who needs help, looks like by tomorrow afternoon we will ready for sea and prepared for angles and dangles. Hope my Jackal makes it thru unscathed. (There- gratuitous Guzzi content)
I think I will don face mask and snorkel, tie myself to yon palm, ride out the whirlwind and listen to the sirene song of hurricane Irma.

Or you could get out of the way .

Irma is at record stage now , and Florida isn't big enough to slow her down . You folks down that way please be safe and cautious , we don't need to lose anyone .

Triple Jim- the bunker in which I hunker is in Palm Coast and that is half-way between St. Augustine and Daytona, about eight miles inland. So the latest info that I have it looks like the eye of Irma will be off shore a ways from us on Monday morning. If it moves just a few miles more to the east this will be a fairly easy ride. Lots of debris, trees down and roof damage, power out for a week but nothing catastrophic. The last hurricane that came through followed the same path and moved about 20 miles east from the projection. That made a huge difference. Come on frontal system- just push Ol' Irma a few more miles east. You can do it.

I'll take this calm before the storm to wish everyone in the danger zone a safe evac or hunker, as they are able.  I hope for no loss of life, and that there will be funds for your rebuild after Texas gets theirs.

I'll also suggest you get used to it.  These sorts of events will be happening with more frequency and power as the energy companies get richer.  I'm seeing it as Ma Nature's way of making it stop.  Either we shut it down or she'll shut us down -- and she's expressing a 3-deep resolve to do just that.

Let's use the collective Mojo of all Guzzisti to THINK EAST.  Much less rain and storm surge on West side of storm.
Hope this cold front pushes the b. out into the middle of the  North Atlantic.

Yep Dave , East , East , East . Irma wreaked havoc on Barbuda , and there is another storm brewing behind Irma that might hit the Islands in the Caribbean .

Just checked the latest from NHC. Oops, Irma is tracking slightly west now. Looks like it will travel inland thru eastern coastal  Florida with my house in the cross-hairs. Still a few more days to impact so it may track a little more west as the front weakens. Wait and see. Meanwhile the prep continues.

I lost my uncle to Katrina. There are many things about him that everyone could emulate, but that decision was not one of them. When and if the time comes to make that choice, do the brave thing - and evacuate if needed.

Been through a lot of storms here in Tampa, but this one is different. I have till tomorrow to make up my mind. My generator is working should I need it, but if my roof gets ripped off that doesn't help much. Will decide tomorrow.

Irma is a significant storm for sure.

From what I understand from the news it is now too late to get out of the way due to fuel shortages and blocked highways.

My thoughts go out to those in it's path. Best of luck to all of you.

Taking a little longer than I thought to get ready. Lots of neighbors need help. I am part of the group the organizes local help and our calling tree has been activated so we are busy tracking who needs help and getting work parties out to them and also organizing the aftermath cleanup. The side roads out of here are still somewhat passable but the interstates are clogged. Gasoline is still coming in, but every station runs out quickly. I went to six stations the other day and the seventh one had fuel. I was trying to fill some jugs for some house bound folks so they can run their generators. Water in the stores? Nada. The town we live in is really good about keeping the water running. They have their own power supply. After the last hurricane electricity was out for a week but we had running water the whole time. That is not a worry. I have a hundred gallons in drums and some filters. This is probably the biggest hurricane I may or may not live though. So exciting. Not.

Guzzi dad and Wave dog.  Fill your bathtubs for flushing purposes.  Doubled trash bags hold water in a pinch.

Another suggestion is to empty your dishwasher and put things you want to preserve in there -- it's generally watertight and firmly attached to a wall.

Have you ever removed or replaced a dishwasher?  I've never seen one firmly anchored to a wall.. Now all the looters know where to look for valuables....

Irma is tracking a little more to the west this a.m. That is good for me but bad for others. In 12 hours it may be a little further west. Traffic is at times amazingly light and gridlocked at others. Water and gas has been coming in. Home Depot yesterday got another shipment of 200 generators. A couple of days ago a large lumber supply company that is just down the road from me, lowered prices on ply and osb. Walmart and Home Depot raised prices, Aldi's and the lumber supply lowered their prices. Interesting. Peoples reactions are all over the map as to be expected. As I go thru the neighborhood checking on folks, some are in complete denial, some are in near panic and wish they could leave. Some are prepped for the zombie apocalypse, others know that this will be bad but have not prepped their house saying that if it gets trashed that is what insurance is for. Again, interesting. The tail end of that frontal system is passing and it is windy, gusty with rain showers. According to the satellite, the bands from Irma, since it is so large, should be arriving this evening. We may not begin to feel the brunt of it until sometime Sunday into Monday.
Being without electricity for a week or two is not so bad and we will have water and I will be able to rig some shelter should the worst happen. The most difficult part of being without power in this area is that the elevation is so low and the ground so flat that there are PEP tanks for each house and they rely on electricity to pump them into the city sewer, so when power goes out your facilities must be used sparingly or it will back up into your house sooner than you think it would. One becomes cognizant of every drop of water going down the drain.
The satellite photos will be interesting to see as the entire penninsula will be covered at some point in time by this hurricane unless it moves way off to the the west. This may be the hurricane of the century. I wouldn't miss it for anything. I can see the meme's coming from Florida- "So, you saw the eclipse? That's nice." Back to work- that's it for now.

My thoughts are with you.

Prices-hard to know what's best, low prices help people in need, high prices prevents hoarding and allows wider distribution.

A tip, that I hope you won't need, but might come in handy.  To prevent sewage back up into your home slip a bike inner tube into the sewer line through the cleanout trap and inflate it with 5 to 10 psi.  You won't flow waste either way so until the flooding is over, and the tube is removed.
The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!

That's a good one to know.    When Irene caused epic flooding in our area back in 2011, there were people in low-lying areas who were on municipal sewer systems who got major amounts of sewage backed up into their homes -- far worse than any other kind of flooding.   That could've been prevented if everyone upstream from them had heeded requests to NOT use their plumbing.
