Snow Tires - any such thing?

They have a new law here in BC, after October 1st you have to have snow tires to ride in the mountains.
Is there such a thing as winter tires for a bike?

Snow tires as in has the snowflake symbol

I guess I will find out tomorrow, going up past Whistler

Check out the HEIDENAU K58. Don't know if the size you need is available, but snow tires for bikes appears to be a thing.

EDIT: Oops. Never mind. These appear to only be available in scooter sizes.

 Way a long time ago , like back when even some of us weren't born yet (hard to believe I know) Firestone advertised snow tires for motorcycles . No idea if they worked , kinda doubt any are left

I have a set that are advertised and rated for accepting the screw in studs for ice. Kind of a fine trials tire look. They are my fall and winter tire for the little supermoto.  Kendas, I think. Don't know if they have a snow flake symbol on the side or not (no political commentary meant or implied).

What by definition in BC makes a snow tire a snow tire beside a symbol?

I would think any "open" tread pattern tire would fit the definition.

If you have spoke rims some riders wrap a rope between the spokes to ride on snow.  I tried riding in 6" of snow with my `74 250 Rickman Montesa dirt bike w/knobbies that worked for awhile 'till the snow packed up under my skid plate....and then the bike wouldn't move forward, nor would it fall over.     1 time I rode my Yamaha RD350 along Marine Drive(next to Columbia River) to work on hard packed snow at 20F up to 40 mph on street tires to work from Vancouver, Wa. to 82nd St in Portland, Or.    That's when I found out what hypothermia was.  My brain told my hands what to do but hands wouldn't respond.    Shoulda had some Hippohands then.

Roy, that is one of the great ironies of living in BC; mandatory M&S or winter tires from Oct to May for 4 wheel vehicles but you can ride your motorbike all year long on the slickest tires you can find, if you wish. Its one of the great mysteries of ICBC.

I know from much experience that mud tires offer no traction on ice. On cars, winter tires have more than aggressive tread. They also use a softer compound that grips dry pavement well when cold. For a bike I should think only studs or spikes would work on ice.

For some real winter fun forget the snow tires and add a 3rd wheel. I was amazed at how well my rig did in the snow and ice w/o studded tires.

Unless that chain is tempered or they continue riding at 3 mph in short order bad things are going to start happening.

Tire studs are such a better way to go. Worst thing that happens is they pull out and fly free from the bike.

 I would put on new knobbier with screw in ice studs on both my sidecar and two wheel bikes.
I sometimes rode at 65 and more with no problems except dodging the cars and jeeps that
were not as capable.

Yea the Greaso as you call it, really pleased with it except for the seat.
Saw 2 other Guzzi on the road a Norge filling up at Lillooet and another on Hwy 7 near Hope

Not sure what these guys are using. Taken in November of 2014 near Buffalo, NY. Some places got 8 feet in 48 hours.

Here's what Mr. Happy would do.  Look at the options at Aerostich.

MC tire chains.  Keep them in the saddle case, install if needed.  Cheap, too.  Surely the Mounties would be okay with these(?).

I sent an email to our minister of transportation a few years ago complaining about the situation.  He replied with a link to a place selling tire chains.  I seem to remember another email or 2 and now, it seems, we motorcyclists are exempt.  The signs now show pictures of vehicles and there's no bike on there.  Maybe I had a little to do with that?  Maybe this democracy thing works?  Dunno.
