A little off topic but I am trying to figure out what kind of animal is pooping on my back steps .

What is that? Some mix of berries or acorns or ? Where do you live? Doesn't look like a true carnivore scat or deer/elk either... how well do you know your neighbors?

My tracking book has a photo of Elk scat that looks like this,but I'm in Connecticut so we don't have a lot of elk and it was on my top stair to my second floor deck. Kind of looks like berries. I think I need a critter cam.

Coyotes leave similar. I should add, they like prominent placement too.

But seriously, I'd bet the farm that's raccoon--have seen plenty of similar near my raccoon-laden woods/pond. They will visit the same places over and over. BTW, they carry a really nasty roundworm and pass the eggs in their stool. This particular roundworm can do ugly things in people, so clean up well and wash your hands. And cover sandboxes--they, and cats with their own ugly parasites, look at sandboxes as luxury tirlets. Disgusting stuff, I know...at least I didn't post any pictures.

PS--I leave the raccoons alone when they are in their environment. When they enter mine (my garage), I use a box trap with the cheapest nastiest can of cat food as bait. Almost too easy. It's their last meal...I return them to their environment to become one with it and take their place in the circle of life.

Possibly fox. It looks like what our foxes leave behind. Generally fox and raccoon scat look like smaller dog or cat poop according to Scats and Tracks of the Northeast.

I'm betting 'coon, too. They're everywhere. Dorcia and I were walking down the PCH in Redondo Beach last week, and a big old coon walked out on the sidewalk, had a look at us, and scuttled back into the bushes. They are definitely *not* vegans, though.. if you have chickens.. just sayin.

We have booth raccoons and fox's around and once in a while a coyote. I don't think it is fox because my chipmunk population exploded this year.

Doesn't look like fox. In the Winter, raccoons commonly feast on berries and seeds.

Racoon. Clean the area with bleach/water 1:10 solution. Put some moth balls in the area, should keep them away.

Omnivore scat, mostly likely a racoon but fox do eat berries at times..And coyotes are opportunist feeders so they might eat anything when hungry...

Funny, I saw similar scat in my backyard the other day. First I thought it was a small dog (despite my yard being fenced) but with nuts and acorns mixed in it.

Concluded it was a racoon. Don't think a possum could get in. Don't know about Armadillos.

Would NE Coyote poop be so different? I can't vouch for much, but I'm certain our Coyote poop is not berry like. It's twisted and ropey. Always black from blood meals. The picture, w/out dimensions, btw, looks like deer scat. Deer scat is easy to pick up, collect and 'dump' on your best friends steps. DAMHIK. R3~

I can eliminate opossum. We had one for a couple years, and it what it produced looked very much like what a human produces, and not much smaller.
