Well, Folks, after some  thought, and consideration, taking into account all the sage advice given here, I have decided to pass on this particular bike. I just dig the look of the carbed bikes with those holes on the sideplates, and  with my riding at 4000 - 5300 ft altitude, I think I can "mess" with carbs better than fi.
Im sure in the future when these bikes soar in value, I will kick myself for not making a deal on this bike, who knows?
If any of you may have some interest in it, feel free to go for it, the seller was very nice , and informative on the phone, and he did say he was negotiable on the price.
Rick.

They will never soar in value, they have been $4500 to $6000 for the last 10 years and will be the same 10 years from now. Bought my immaculate '97 from Mark Etheridge at Moto Guzzi Classics  for $4500 and sold it 3 years later for $4500 then the guy I bought it from wanted to sell it back for $3500 since he bought it to flip it and couldn`t find a buyer in a year

I remember a '76 850 Le Mans sitting unloved for a year, offered by a local dealer for $2800.  Wish I'd bought it.  OTOH I did buy a bevel drive 900SS Ducati for a little over $5K and I remember being told by Pro Italia when I called them for parts that "only the Australians (chuckle, smirk) will ever be interested in 'that old stuff' again", and that $5K was "absolute top dollar" for a bevel 900SS.  Perceptions do change over time, and I think the 1100 Sports have enduring appeal.

PS In the here and now, that CL bike looks like a super high mileage rat that will sell for half the asking price.  Better to buy a really nice one.

Chesterfield, thats a beautiful bike! I cant believe they wont go up in value, I mean they are not making any more ... Its a classic Italian sport bike, beautiful lines, most  Guzzisti love them, body parts are getting very hard to find, some guys are even hoarding them, keeping spares etc. etc.
Do you still own yours?
Would you let it go for $4500. ?
I think supply/demand will result in a substantial value increase in 10 years or so.
Last but not least.....I keep going back to the picture Chuck's Son's red one....Ooh La La...that  shiny red paint, and white wheels gets my pulse rate up!

These really are great bikes. I don't care for yellow.

The FI actually works well with altitude changes. There are aftermarket chips available ( Creedon Chip)that solve FI issues.

Steering is affected by tire choice. Flatter profile tires suck. A V shaped profile makes a huge difference. My bike handles like it's on rails.

If my stable wasn't full, I'd have been in Benson last week with $3,500 cash.

I found some of the super aggressive modern sport bike tyres don't agree with the sports old school geometry and made the front end have the constant feeling of wanting to fold. So I'm back to the sports touring type tyres these have come along far enough they will cope with anything the 1100 sport will achieve on the road.

They are cool, I just don`t think that they generate interest except to Guzzi dudes who wont pay up for anything.

I have a 96 carb model and have ridden the FI also. I prefer the carbs. When they went to injection they also lowered the compression ratio, so the card version has a bit more oomph . Also the injection model gained about 30 or 40 lbs. I replaced the throttle with a 1/4 turn one and it makes a BIG difference. Mine has over 50,000 hard miles with no problems....though I did replace the clutch. I also lowered the triple clamps about 6mm and that quickened the steering .

Both carb and injected 1100 Sports make somewhere in the range of 73 to 78 RWHP, depending on the individual bike, and there is no difference in the engine state of tune between carb and EFI models.  I believe the first reduced power model was the 1100 Breva.

I prefer rounded profile front tires on an 1100 Sport, the best IME were the late, lamented Pirelli Dragon Supercorsas, which gave a really nice turn in.   I also prefer the forks in the slowest steering (flush with the triple clamp) position, for the same reason, having tried them all over the place.  My preference is neutral steering all the way for zero to max lean, not light steering at small lean angles.

I would because I sold it just last year and had ONE inquiry. Then like I said he held on to it for a year to flip it and ended up calling me asking to buy it back for $3500 because he was moving out of state. He was a salesman at a large motorcycle shop within 10 miles of Moto International.
