My biggest concern was the cooling system. It's summer here now and where Mark lives it gets as hot as hades in summer, weeks on end of 40*C are not unknown. If it's going to pop it's clogs due to cooling problems we'll know soon enough.

Michael put a lot of thought into addressing the cooling issues. As I said before, this project is mostly his and Mark's. I can take little credit.

If I had a bullish mill like that in my Norge, odds on I'd "pop" before it did !

Nah. Piston cooling is fine. It's the top end that got the attention.

Cali 1400 uses a thermostatic electric fan on the OC , I suppose it could be an option for the kong griso. I would assume you guy's are somehow monitoring oil temps with the new beast. I know the 1400 even with the fan on pumps out a ton more heat than the 1200.  Oil temps for me always seem to stay about the same 1200 and 1400 when hot, around 120 C. I imagine it may be a little different without the fan. My guess is you will probably no longer need to worry about the 14 griso motor over cooling or maybe even the opposite. May the god of reliability shine on you!

You guy's rock..

I guess that humungous oil cooler that is strapped on the side of the Griso and that makes mayonnaise in winter will come in to it's own in summer. Sounds like it is going to be needed.

We are hitting 33 deg already here in Christchurch (that's really hot for us at this time of the year) so I guess you guys in Oz are really cooking.

Great job by the way guys. Entertaining too! :thumb:

Are you thinking of doing a similar job on your hooligan bike Pete?

Not right at the moment, I can't afford it. Once I've ridden it when it's mapped up properly I'll decide. My guess is it will be a very hard choice not to build one for myself.

I also need to get my original engine block back from Ron so I can work out a way to install an early type front main bearing into it. All our attempts to find a bearing manufacturer who would supply us with a press in bearing at a reasonable price have come to nought so my next 'Plan B' is to fit an earlier type main. All the mounting bosses etc. are still cast into the case. The crank journal is the same length. We can at least try. If that can work I could build a 1400 into that and return my bike to its original engine # which would be mildly amusing in a slightly mad sort of way.

Hottest temp reported by the ECU while riding has been 125. Incidentally, that is the maximum temp it will report. Ambient temp was 30. That was due to logging run shenanigans. Yesterday, another 30 degree day, I was able to keep reported temp to 107 by going into cruise mode between WOT craziness. That big oil cooler is very effective. I may start taking my infrared thermometer on runs with me.

I don't ride when it's 40+ outside. That's just stupid.

There is a german shop making new main bearings for the old blocks.

http://hmb-guzzi.de/Main-Bearing-front-standard

They do make a number of older parts that are not available anymore. Made to high standard.

Contact him, and see what he can do.

Getting the older type bearing isn't the problem Paul. It's the construction of the new front one which is effectively just a pressed in sleeve in the case that presents the problem.

I know, but If someone can make an old type, he has the supply's to make a new type.  But suppose the thing is, it gets machined after being pressed in.

Y'know, somewhere, in the sort of base, reptilian hind-brain of my soul I really wanted this to be a wash-out. I love my 1200 and really, I don't need anything more than what it offers. But then we built this thing and it sounds like a lot of fun. And one day, soon, I'll get to ride it, and then I think I can see another huge haemoragic loss from my bank account and a lot of weasling by way of excusing it! :embarassed:

I don't know what your tax laws are like in Oz, but, here in the US, you'd build one for yourself and write it off your taxes as "Research & Development."

In the 'States, what would happen if you did that (and I'd be thrilled to bits if Pete could do it here), and the thing let go and locked the arse end up resulting in a crash that killed someone.
Would some bottom dwelling ambulance chasing litigator, hound you to the ends of the earth and relieve you of everything you own ?
Just the sort of crap that would stimey the efforts of guys like these..

That is why you incorporate and have liability insurance. The corporation is the legal entity and is the one that gets sued.

I used to make a conversion to put tubular bars on the Ducati ST2/4. My liability insurance carrier said, "You are doing something that affects the steering of a motorcycle?? Quit."

S'all good! I reckon the real fun will be between 3.8 and about 7. Above that VE will drop off sharply and worse than the 1200 but in that range I think the 'Pull down the front of the Royal Hotel" scenario will be realisable.

Your crystal ball is working. VE above 60% throttle from 3500 to 7500 is pretty ordinary. You can almost hear the fuel going "glug, glug, glug" as it drinks it down like your first beer on a hot day.

I'm fiddling with the ignition to see if I can ease it back.

That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.
