Janus Motorcycles?
« Reply #60 on: January 06, 2020, 11:52:13 PM »
anyone know anything about these bikes?

i was just watching the Frankie Drake Mysteries 'pilot' episode and her bike is a janus.  it looks like a vintage bike but there was a clear "janus" logo emblazoned upon the tank. so, i looked them up and they are a sort of repro outfit out of goshen indiana. they use a chinese copy of a honda 229 cc power plant. the bike is a bit of a chimera.  i like the way the halcyon model looks even though the motor and the front suspension give it away as a new model designed to look vintage. still and all i think they did a good job. anyone know anything about them and specifically about that chinese engine?  its $7k US for the base model and that seems a bit pricey for a 230 cc bike with a chinese motor but they are nice looking pseudo-vintage bikes. info?

The saddles look a bit uncomfortable although they have to be that way to go with the design.

A friend ordered a Halcyon (he is a Frankie Drake fan) for pickup in April.

Looks fun, and with the bags a cool alternative to a new Vespa. But he has one of those too.

My Son-in-law,who also lives next door, has a Halcyon he ordered from the Company.  They are unique in their production because each bike is constructed to the customers personal tastes in reference to color and all other bling.  It is truly a vintage looking machine and draws crowds wherever it is parked.  I have ridden it and it is a fun machine, but in my opinion somewhat underpowered.  I think my 67 Honda CL77 would take him in a straight up drag.  We may try that when the weather warms and we have a couple of extra hours to complete the race........

I think they're stupid looking. They could at least put a decent sized motor in it. I'll bet that the skinny jeans wearing vaping guys think that they're cooler than s#!t.

well, as a model for a vintage bike you could do no better than a guzzi GTW.

hey steven C. - thanks for the link to the ADVrider posts. just what i needed!

if i had some extra pin money i would consider getting one.  i think it would be a hoot to have one of these bikes.  yeah, they are pricey but i really like the idea of supporting a small american manufacturer.

i have been looking into getting a light weight, flickable, fun bike for local runs to the store and general mild mayhem. my bike of choice to date has been a KTM RC 390 but i could easily buy the janus halcyon instead.  my other option is to buy another honda CL 77 - i have owned 2 previously and am really fond of them.

the things holding me back are the price and the fact that its a hard tail.

i wish the folks at janus all the best on their endeavor.

For a minute I thought I’d mistaken this thread for “Can you take a joke..?”
Did I see $7,000 American dollars as the price tag ?
It looks like something from scrapyard challenge...literal ly !
The styling is all over the place. The comment about the skinny jeaned vaping hipsters standing around stroking their Three Musketeer replica styled facial growth gutsing smashed avocado and texting simultaneously, conjured an image that’s hard to un see.
Jeez I’m glad I’m getting old..
I can hear it now..
OMG DUDE..!
I’m like wow, that biiike is so rad Man...! My besty has like got one and I’m like no waaayyy !
I’ve gone, “I’m like so getting one.....?”
Lock it in bro’, from now on I’m soooo into bikes....!
‘Scuse me y’all, I’m about to regurgitate last night’s tofu.... :coffee:

Interesting reactions. A small, American, rural motorcycle/moped manufacturer, making a go of it by employing mostly local craftsman, using what is by all accounts a reliable small Chinese engine for obvious reasons, and in reading the online reviews it seems like they have a lot of happy customers - why the hate? What's wrong with this picture? Live and let live. I'm happy that they seem to be making a go of it, they seem like nice people investing their lives into this venture.
Gotta love the internet - everyone owns a megaphone now. Its in large part why one half the country now despises the other half of the country, and it does not seem to be getting any better.  :violent1:

Man o man, not one positive comment.  Rough crowd. As for my .02, I like 'em.  Wonderful lines.  Practical?  Not so much, but then, either is candy.

I wouldn't begrudge anybody who has invested capital in a different idea.  The market will hash it all out for them.  Time, as always, will tell.

The Gryffin is a neat looking scrambler.  I like these bikes, but I could be biased on account of being a Hoosier.  I've talked to these guys and they are passionate about motorcycles.  Here's to them for having the stones to chase their dream and build their own motorcycles.  Best of luck to them.

yeah, i'm with you on this. i wish them all the success in the world. they make an interesting product - a sort of hybrid of old and new.  it takes a lot of guts to start a new corporation like this - ask eric buell or the folks at motus.

the bike i would want is one that they do not make. i would want the halcyon bike (with its long skinny tank and tractor seat) but with a swingarm.  there is no way that they can do the tractor seat with the rear suspension as they are using two different frames: the hard tail on the halcyon and the soft tail on the other 2.

It's a DISCUSSION list, this WG thing.  It's not a Mutual Admiration Society, it's not a "I can appreciate the craftsmanship that went into this" forum when someone posts up a butt-ugly, unrideable chopper, it's not an "Everything is BEAAAUUUtifullll, in it's own way" list.

People actually express their real opinions here .... "I think that's a terrible idea"   "I'd never buy this for that price"   "I despise that kind of behavior" are all perfectly valid opinions when someone goes public with "What does the panel think of THIS???"

Some people (present company excepted) seem to get all upset when someone expresses an opinion different from theirs, and that's one reason why Internet forums seem so divisive sometimes.

I like it.  I would rather have a tall long stroke single in there, but I'm sure nobody makes one. It doesn't have to be practical, ya know..
Good on them for giving it a go. I just may run up to Goshen and have a look.

Indeed, this country was founded on differences of opinion. Nothing more American than debating and respecting differences of opinion. I love guzzis but happen to think the Centauro is one of the ugliest bikes of all time - but damned good on ya if you love 'em and ride 'em. I'm just tired of people assigning labels based on their like and opinions. Like a Harley? Must be a poser. Don't agree with the person I voted for? Must hate the country. Ride a Janus? Must be a latte loving hipster. I think it's great to have a small American "craft" bike maufacturer making a go of it, and if you happen to ride a Janus I'd love to have a beer with you and talk about Why you love your bike. Might even have a latte..... Nah!  love this forum by the way...
