Jackal EV mix and match..
« on: December 19, 2017, 11:24:38 AM »
I gots me a Jackal (looove it) and just aquired
an 80th aniversery beautiful EV (Dark maroon color)
for the perimiter spoke/tubeless feature. (im too far from home alot and fear a flat out there with tubes ..)
Also the dual disc..tach..40ltr Hepcos..crash bars..
Hate Hate hate the handlebars..and seat.
In fact if i could put sporty'er bars..shorter normal shifter ..and brake pedal i would.
Immediately got rid of the "floor boards"
LESS IS MORE!
Im looking here to get directed to any info on stripping the EV or switching out rims etc. on the Jackal.
Im sure its been done plenty.
(also the Jackal seems quicker ??
maybe the crossover?)
Are the seats and rims interchangeable?
Thanks for any help.
(ya...its the ol Ouiji from back then 02Lemans)

might be easier to put the entire fork/front end on the Jack before trying to adapt the wheel and second disc. ?
or swap the lower frame rails with footpegs to the EV and make that the rider? along with the  Jackal handlebars?

is that EV the hydro block?

Maybe a short statement of what you're trying to do?  Someone here has probably already gone there -- we just need to know where "there" is.

Depending on if your EV is hydro or regular the engine will feel different.

Seat should swap.  Bag rails won't -- the lower forward bracket (muffler hanger) is different length.  Depending on the rear fender (fat EV cowl or regular Jackal mudguard) you might have rear fit problems too.  Don't know about the seat grab rail/sissy bar stuff.

For what you want to do, just pick your poison and go with it.  The swap-a-rama will be as complicated in one direction as the other.  I'd keep the EV platform and strip it simply because a titled EV is worth more than a titled Jackal.

I'm in the camp that says do your swap at the system level rather than the component level as much as possible.  It's much easier to swap front ends complete than screw around with the nuance differences between EV and Jackal offsets, spacers, m/c bores, etc.  You end up with a system designed for fat bars, dual front brakes, and adjustable damping.

Rear wheel swap might be more of a problem.  I don't recall if the Jackal swing arm is the same as the EV.  The EV swing arm has been widened for the fatter tubeless wheel.  The drive shaft is also very different.  You might have to swap out all that stuff.  Put the better EV shocks on the final product.

Wow! That was quick.
Thanks everyone.
Looks like the EV will be the keeper due to the
the rear end. Oh.. its an 02 -80th  anniversery...so there's that. ..normal lifters.
The object is ...strip it down ..lighten it up....eventually..n ext year maybe even put the huge fenders and such on the shelf...is there an alternative to the heel toe shifter ?

on the heel tow shifter.. How long have you been riding it? maybe give it a little more ride time before deciding you don't like.. I always liked the way it worked. Like the brake pedal with the heel nub it does take some getting used to.

Are you going to keep both as runners?

I have a Calvin and a Jackal.
I stripped a lot of the extra stuff off the Calvin and put lower euro style bars on it but left the floor boards and shifter stock.
My Jackal I have modified a bit more. I ride the Jackal most often. The Jackal is lighter and handles better(quicker).
I made my own peg setup that are about 7-8 inches farther back than the stock Jackal peg position.
I cut off the heel part of the shifter arm.
I dropped the forks about an inch and put riser clipons mounted above the triple clamp.

I have a 2003 California with parts from 18 different models from 1974 through 2011.  And a few homemade parts.  Parts are very interchangeable on the Tonti frame bikes.  Some may need a little grooming to fit.

I do not do pictures.  Maybe someone out there can post up a picture they have of the bike for you.

in fact you can merge an EV 1100 motor to a Convert drive train and skin it with SP body..
I called it the SPEVert

look at all the love for the lowly Jackal by discerning riders! woot!

I too went lean on my Jackal, but recently put the boards back on as they are lower/wider than the pegs and a bit more comfy for my 34" inseam.

As for the seat, I like the lean and mean solo look as well, but I have a custom which built up the main seat and it's nearly level with the pillion, allowing for lots of movement, again, for comfort for my lanky frame.

I'm telling you, low mileage unmolested Jackals are going to become more coveted for just the reasons being addressed here. Looking forward to seeing what "there" ends up being for this bike. cheers.

Wow. You guys is all my heros...
And yeah...I think someday the lowly Jackal is going to be highly coveted.
Thank you all for your responses..
only got as far as switching seat latches and trying to fit the J seat to the EV.
The Jackal latch sticks up an inch or so higher but not high enough to adapt it straight swap.
Considering options including carving down the EV Barco lounger seat or sending it out to be done.
Other options are build the latch up higher...need another 1.5" ...carve the seat pan up.. chop some fender out.
Haven't looked at EV seat going on the Jackal.
Christmas and freezing ass cold is not helping..
I'll get some pictures once I get going..

When I still had a Jackal, I enjoyed having it in stock trim.  The PO had stuck a lot of stuff on it.  I took most of the stuff off.  Car air horn, leather seat, Plexistar II windshield and highway pegs.  If I had kept it, probably switch out the handlebars to drag bars.  Underrated bikes even by forum members.  A good blank slate to roll your own.  :thumb:
