EV fuel line replacement help!
« on: December 27, 2017, 10:17:10 PM »
Hi-

Started the EV this morning and noticed a leak. Seems to me coming from one of the fuel lines going to the driver side injector. Removed the assembly from the pressure regulator(single line) to the Y and then split into 2 on their way to the injectors. Went to Nappa and purchased 5/16 (7.9mm) hose as someone replaced it years ago with the same Gates. Got some new screw on smooth inner clamps and proceeded to make a new Y assembly. No matter how hard I try (even purchased smaller clamps) I could not get the hose not to turn on the junction. I found this brilliant article by Patrick Hayes:

http://www.guzzipower.com/FI-HoseReplace-Pat_H.html

Question...does anyone know of a good source for the hose and clamps that I need?

Would this kit work from Euro Motoelectircs?

What I thought was going to be an easy fix today turned into a project.  :violent1:

Thanks, Brian

So, why not run down to your local BMW car dealership?

Should work, but so should the ones you already purchased.  I don't like those clamps provided by EME.

This is what the BMW clamp looks like.  Nice, small hex head for tightening with a nutdriver.. 4 or 5 mm I think.

Worked fine on my EV. Has since worked fine on a lot of other hoses. Solid tool for short money.

Hi Ron-

Did you use these crimp on clamps just on the Y junction? How about where the hose connects to the injector?

Thanks-Brian

I just build the hose assemblies with the permanent clamps. I want to be able to remove assemblies in case field maintenance is required.

You can use any hose that has the SAE  J30R9 rating that is the right diameter. I think I used either Gates or Dayco.
Use high quality clamps designed for FI or the crimp ons.
I used these,

Thanks for all your info...I just order a dozen of the BMW clamps and some 7.5 X 13.5 smooth rubber outside w/ inside braiding FI hose. The Gates and Dayco 5/16" just doesn't fit snug enough.

thanks...ordered the kit and will use ear clamps on the Y junction. The line connecting to the regulator and fuel injectors will be BMW clamps.

update:
I ended up getting the BMW smooth inner high pressure hose clamps and replaced the original 7.9 mm (5/16") hose with 7.5mm which is a much tighter fit. Took the bike out for a quick jaunt and all seems well. thanks for everyone's input here.

Just a tip -- I sometimes deliberately get smaller hose for these particular fittings and install them with a heat gun.  As the hose cools it shrinks onto the barbs.  I forgot to put a hose clamp on an injector the last time I did the hose.  I noticed and corrected it ~12k miles later because the clamp was missing, not because it was leaking.  Now I'm not suggesting that you skip the clamp part of the installation.  I'm just saying that a "sloppy" 1/4" hose will fit a sloppy 8mm barb with the help of a little heat.

Learned (the hard way) that when one part goes bad to check, heck replace, the entire fuel system hoses. YMMV
