I live in Long Beach Ca. Don't get much more populated than this. My house backs up to a channel for rain water. we have Coyotes running up and down the channel grabbing dogs and cats in the neighborhood.  Twice they jumped over our 6' wall and got into it with my Shiba Inu who ended up chasing them out of the yard. pretty impressive little dog.

My son and Shiba

That's a cute dog - looks a lot like a little half-Spitz that Fay had when we were married.

"Attitude" is probably what weighs most in a confrontation between a dog and a coyote.    If the dog believes he can whip the coyote, the coyote will believe it too .... I have no fears for our Jack - 50 pound male border collie.   Glad to hear that Shiba is on the job!

Well, the good thing about coyotes is, they do help keep down the domestic cat population. So there's that.
Unmitigated risk aversion is the new Puritanism; complete with witch hunts funny outfits and humorless preachers thundering doom. The Deity is Safety; Satan is a Lawyer; but the object is the same: to suck the life out of life and tell you how to live it.

Bev put out some bird seed.  We had 7 pair of cardinals at one time yesterday.  Here's one snap.

Nice shot John, we feed the boids too.

We have these weird coyotes in our back yard??

I had two coonhounds back in California that I let run loose on my very rural mountain property. They would intimidate the local coyotes and bring back "treats" for me. It was after they left a coyote head on the porch that I decided to rein them in. That and the deer legs they hauled through the doggie door and left in the living room.
This, more than anything I’ve ever read, convinces me that we live in a different universe to the USA.

The drought is bring them out. Think these two were raiding our birdbath as the water level went down much quicker than usual last night. Saw this pair at sunrise this morning.

A friend took me fly fishing by jet boat up Tannana River. He wore some sort of cannon on his hip. He also brought his sheba 'for bears'. 'Why the pistol?' 'To put the grizzlies out of misery after the dog's finished playing'

I bet the "cannon" was actually a lighter to fire up his bong. regardless of the size of your companion, never let them fight with a wild animal. even if they win, and even if they don't get rabies, lepto or any other problems, you are encouraging aggression.

had a friend that lived in Sitka and worked for the Forest Service.  Told me that everyone had an allowance to purchase a hi powered rifle for protection from the Grizzlies.   He said that anyone that went into the forest should never be unarmed and .357 was too small.
