In todays market, He will be lucky to get $1,000 for the old use high mileage bike.  Too many newer bikes with 1/10th the miles out there for sale for less.  Nice bike though.

Oh c 'mon , that bike will bring more . I bet 2500 .

And i disagree that 35 k is high mileage for that bike.

Not only that, but a Transalp isn't just an interchangeable, bland UJM like many Japanese bikes. They have a bit of a "cult following" and those folks will likely pay the asking price or close to it.

We had one in our Vintage Display at the international bike show, the newest bike displayed, a 1988 I think, it was the owners third Transalp and he just loves it.

The Transalp didn't catch on here but from reliable sources they are fantastic bikes.

I've always like Transalps.  20hp more than a KLR, similar ergos and roughly the same weight.  It's a great engine and they're stone reliable.  My concern would be that 30 year old plastic gets brittle and riding the bike like it was intended could break it.  They were a one or two year only bike in the States and finding replacements would be expensive.  They do have a cult following and the seller will probably find a buyer but I'd have a hard time paying more than $2,500 for one.

As shown on most of the Transalps pictured here, they are sporting GIVI crash bars. They are a nice functional set that do a reasonable job of protecting the plastic, which being Honda spec, is pretty durable itself as far as plastics go. The 600cc three valve per mill was used in the Shadow 600 cruiser, so it's relatively understressed and calm in a Volvo 240 engine kind of way. Aside from the poorly-located-under-the-seat ignition module failures, (easliy fixed), they are extremely reliable, capable, and comfortable ADV bikes. A poor man's GS... And yes, there is a cult following large enough to find a buyer. There always seems to be at least one with a $2500 USD for sale sign on it at any given vintage moto event I've ever attended.

$5,900 !?!  Wow!    Gonna take quite a smitten collector to pony that up, I'd think .....

considering the other one cost $3800, and has 35,000 miles.
and the second one has 7500 miles, just completely serviced, new battery, extra factory bodywork, exhaust (aftermarket exhaust now),
aftermarket lights, taller windscreen, and sidecases/topcase, and a list of other goodies, I'd say it's worth the additional $2100 asking price. but you know what they say about opinions

Once bikes reach "cult" status (Honda GB500, Suzuki GT750, Kaw H2, even the K75 Beemer) it's really hard to figure a price any more ....

I test rode one.  Was not impressed.

There is a reason it didn't last long in the US.

I think they were ahead of the times.  If the Transalp had come out ten years later they would have been popular.  Same goes for the NT650.  They didn’t sell well either but when Suzuki introduced the SV650 a decade after the NT they sold a ton of them and they’re still popular today.  If I had to choose between a KLR650, I’d pick the Honda 10 Times out of 10

true, I also think if MG reoffered a convert type bike, it would sell

The original Tranalp did continue and slowly evolve for the European market,  becoming one of Honda's big sellers for a long time.  They were very practical so a lot of people bought them as city bikes. I rented one for a couple of weeks around 10 years ago.  It was OK, especially considering the very low price, and the seat was comfortable but otherwise the original style Africa Twin sold in Europe was better.

I think the value of a 1990 Transalp in Europe would be a few hundred Euro depending on condition - but you wouldn't find a lot of really nice ones.

Depends on condition, but its not a special bike in Europe or close.  In Europe a 1990 Transalp is a 28 year old Japanese bike of a model that that was cheap new and sold in high volume as a utility bike for over 20 years.  A really old one is not going to be worth much in that market, although obviously condition and mileage has a lot to do with what a buyer will pay.

In the US, who knows?  Whatever one individual will pay for an uncommon old Japanese bike.

I'm in the USA, isn't a few hundred Euro the same as $372?

I own one presently, but it needs money thrown at it to be roadworthy again, and I'm still debating whether to invest in it or not. It cost me $3k CDN in 2010 and gave me 5 years of great service with miserly insurance and fuel costs, so I certainly can't complain. The best part was that the cockpit seemed tailor-made for me.
