In the past it probably was a motorcyclist.  A big red boomer can weigh more than 200 pounds.
That can cause some real pain.
When I see an animal like that, I think what a wonderful whip it could be.

'Roo strikes are very common here, it's one of the reasons I no longer ride after dark and try to be off the road well before dusk. According to the NSW insurance association our area, (Queanbeyan/Canberra region.) has the highest rate of roo strikes in the state. It's entirely believable as the do ads around here are like a charnel house! Every morning there will be two or three new corpses just on the road between Bungendore and Queanbeyan. Some of them are big buggers too! The cost in terms of insurance is frightening.

Next time I see a fresh, big, eastern grey I'll try and stop and take a pic so you can get some idea of the size they can be! It'll have to be a fresh one as they get stinky pretty damned quick when it's 30*C+ and the corpses are just left to rot, I'm told because they are a warning to drivers that they are around! Well 'Duh'!

Pete

PS. That one in the vid is tiny, only a joey or very small swamp wallaby.

This is the kind of thing that will make anyone who watches it understand how stupid and inexperienced people must be when they make comments on forums like "You can avoid deer collisions if you just keep your eyes open and be careful".    Like roos, deer often cannon into you from the side and you never even see the one that hits you ....

Dangerous things and as Pete says, the only way to avoid SOME of the collisions is to flat stay off the road at night in deer or 'roo country ....

Alarmingly scary video. I hope that the female cyclist did not suffer serious injuries in that strike.

As a rider in the USA, running deer are one of my highest concerns when operating my bikes. Always unpredictable and lately more common to see than previous seasons.

OUCH!!!  Shows why I avoid night riding whenever possible.  Reminds me of a story told by a local resident.  He had moved from a mid-western urban environment to rural WV and saw that his insurance rates had gone up.  He called his agent to say that his vehicle was now garaged and that traffic was far less dense than at his past residence.  He asked why the rate increase?  His agent replied "Sir, how many deer did you hit while at your old residence"? Point well taken.

Yeah, Southern Illinois is a Deer nightmare...corn fed and plenty of Coal Company ground to hide on...these suckers are HUGE...quit riding after dark right after I moved here...
