Rain rain rain NGC
« on: February 24, 2018, 10:37:50 AM »
We haven't seen the Sun in 5 days , not even a glimpse . Likely we won't see it today either , despite the forecast last night saying the rain would be ending about noon . It just keeps coming , puddles in the front yard big enough to start a fish hatchery , 29 years and have never witnessed that . The sad part , our farmer buddies in Kansas , Nebraska , and out West in Oklahoma aren't seeing a drop . Have been trying to send some of this your way fellas , so far that isn't working . The good news , Ken says his Turnip crop (if he had planted this year) would be doing quite well . Really hope his Wallaby Hoppy is staying dry .

Anyway , the weather guessers are saying bright Sun starting tomorrow and lasting for several days, highs in the 60's , dang , if they aren't right even the frogs are gonna start complaining. Hope it drys out before the grass starts growing or we are gonna need a fan boat with a mower attachment <sigh>

Well, over here in the Bermuda high it's 75 sunny & I'm going for a ride. For once it's nice to have something stalled.

It’s been in the eighties for the last week here in Waldheim. The grass is green and everything’s budding/leafing out. A couple of days were really excellent for riding (naturally, I have a torn Achilles and cannot ride), but mostly it’s been raining with hardly a pause. Crossing the yard feels like walking on a saturated sponge...

Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play
Dear Prudence, greet the brand new day
The sun is up, the sky is blue
It's beautiful and so are you
Dear Prudence won't you come out to play

But not here.  A week of ice and snow and now rain washing it all away.

The sky is turning "a lighter shade of".. gray (should be a song)

I spoke with Ken the other day.  He says he's glad the drought broke at the Oleo Ranch, and reported that Hoppy and Wilson will welcome their second addition this spring.

Soil's in good shape here, not too wet and 52 degF soil temperature, so today was pea planting day.

Onions and spinach next week, potatoes in a couple weeks.   First corn planting when either the poplar leaves are the size of a squirrel's ear, or the day after you hear the first whippoorwill ... usually around April 15th.

Neverending rain outside of Dallas as well.  My yard is so flooded I cannot get to the back porch where I normally park the bikes.

Now here is some Guzzi content.   This kind of never ending rain sure makes you appreciate a shaft drive system.   Guzzi is down, so I have been commuting on my chain driven two-fiddy.   Water up to footpegs in places.  Has to be left outside on the gravel road.  By the second day of this regime the chain was turning orange from rust despite me lubing once a day.

It is pretty darn annoying to have to stand out in the rain and constantly spray chain lube on a twice per day schedule.

I do not mind a chain for short trips and decent weather.  But long trips or lots of rain is a different matter.

What kind of chain lube are you using? With O ring chains and the stuff I buy at Cyclegear, marketed by Motion Pro, we've never had chains turn orange with rust even putting the bikes up wet after riding in heavy rain for hundreds of miles. The stuff I have been using sticks on pretty well and water isn't gonna wash it off. Dirt attaching is the only real problem.
The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!

Pittsburgh has been an absolute mess this winter. If it isn’t snowing it’s raining. If it isn’t raining it’s cloudy. And always windy, it seems. Grrrr. I just want to move southwest. My poor V7C has been hiding under her cover for too long. I picked up a 2011 Yamaha XT250 a couple weeks ago and absolutely love it. I can bomb around the city and if I drop it on salt or gravel, no big deal.

Come back, sunshine.

Why?

It's obvious.
He was trying to wear the last of those knobbies off so he could tire-up with fresh blocks for the next ride.
Have to admit, he's done a good job of it. I can't see much of a tread, let alone rounded knobs.

Yeah, but that was just the last one.  Did you see the piles of tires he wore out trying to extract hisself?

Back home we'd wait for the next freeze and bring in a dog team.  Maybe throw a tarp over it.

Well, it finally quit raining here in The Hills.  It's been raining pretty much non-stop since Monday.

It's a soggy, muddy mess.

I change my own tires at home, so have plenty around.   I put a bunch of old tires around the BMW in case it tipped over.   For a while there we had 30 mph gusts.

Flood gates going up along the Ohio River here in Southern Indiana.   Expected to rise another 5 feet in the next couple of days.  Still 15 feet lower than the 1937 flood.  Glad I live on top of a hill.
