breather blowing oil on LM1
« on: March 08, 2018, 05:16:23 PM »
after a 20mile run at approx 80+ mph and about 6krpm, I noticed some  engine oil  from the breather  tube on the center stand and rear wheel rim. The bike is a low mileage unit, has no smoke on start-up, and  asides  from the recent event does not use oil The breather is flow- through stock unit as per Guzziology and has  a check ball type valve is in the engine metal breather tube.  The  multiple choice  questions then are: a) get a catch can , b) Agostini Breather ( worked great on my hot rodded CX) c) Engine rebuild.

The flap in the breather is possibly your problem. I had the same issue with my CX on a 1100 mile trip and it was something I discarded until I got to my location and finally removed the breather and knocked out the flap. End of problem.

You said your can if free-flow, is that no flap/disc on a spring?  Could be the check valve ball got stuck, then opened causing the mess.  Mine has gotten stuck and blew the rear main seal.
I have also seen the whole check valve up the hose from being stuck.

My bet is it's trying to puke 1/2 qt so it's halfway on the stick, then it will stop.

Sorry to disappoint the quick guessers , but the 3 quarts and a tiny bit more (3 liters) has been general knowledge for me since the  1970's when I first got my Ambo. As per the flap inside the breather, I did bust it as per Guzziology. The ball check valve does need to be looked at as its been a couple years since I did that. Chuck maybe onto something as the leakdown was just about 20% when last checked, but this is an old bike and s***t happens. Will report on the next findings. Cheers

Do you have the shallow sump the bike came with or have you added a sump extender? The basic problem is probably crankcase over-pressurization from sustained riding at higher rpm. If you haven't added a sump extender, it's the first thing I would do to deal with the oil-puking-out-the-breather problem. And, with a deeper sump, continue to use just the standard 3 quarts/3 liters of oil.

It's my understanding that it's 3 liters if/when dropping the pan and replacing the filter, and 2.5 liters when doing a normal oil change. I came across this somewhere on this forum I believe about a year or so ago.

This ^^.

3 qts. = 2.8 liters. I use 3 qts. exactly, no more.
