I appreciate your empathy.

So cold last night the snow cracked.
Minus 23C this morning has warmed up to -11.
Another month and ....  maybe.

Actually...it's only during the "HEAVEN" season (winter).... :thumb:

"HELL" aka "The Forbidden Planet" season begins May 31st...and last 4+ long, hot months!

....and you won't be riding a bicycle 22-miles when it is 115 degrees out....believe me!

And, it is 30 below on the porch this morning. That isn't spring. It's mid flipping January.

Yes,  I misspoke.  It's spring when I'm here.  I leave when I get hot and go back to "spring" elsewhere.   :thumb:

Following the coldest, snowiest winter I can recall, it has been beautiful here in Waldheim since mid-February. The Azaleas, Japanese Magnolias, Bridal Veil, and Lady Banks roses have just about finished blooming and the grass is growing like mad. We've had the AC running for a while now. I rode the Vintage to church this morning and have just changed into shorts and flip-flops. This probably means a hellishly hot summer, but at the moment I'm digging the weather.

Slowly, we're working our way back to springtime.  I drove (car) south to Charleston WV yesterday to be with my grand daughter on her 18th birthday, and though it wasn't springtime warm, some of the flowers and trees were starting to bloom.  That only means we here in NE Ohio are 2-3 weeks behind.  Can't wait!

Although it's just finished snowing and being horrible, peas planted a month ago today are showing their little green sprouts above the ground, onions have been planted, potatoes have been cut and are "curing" in the window behind me for planting this week, heading to a nursery this week to pick up blueberry and blackberry plants, and as soon as my heating mat for the seed containers gets here, the rest of the hot-weather seeds will get planted indoors (this week).

OH, yeah, it's spring all right!

S'not spring until the leaves on the oaks are the size of a mouses ear, that's when you plant the corn.
 Old Indian advice.

 Old Indian advice.

Old Mr. Franklin on the next place (he was 93 at the time) told me that his guide for the 60 corn crops he'd planted was:

1) Plant when the poplar leaves are the size of a squirrel's ear (probably was carried forward from the Indians)

OR

2) Plant the days after you hear the first whippoorwills.

And that's not just "plant by the moon" advice.   The plants and animals know when it's warm enough for long enough for things to start growing, you can trust them!

Plus it's very "local" information.   We live in a little microclimate on this place, where we'll have frost on the leaves when no one in the area does.   Going by "Zone 7" advice that covers 2000 square miles doesn't work for us.   The leaves and birds do ....

thank you JJ, 'nice to see a little green.
In these parts, the spring riding season begins
when the snow is gone and a few rains have
managed to wash the white crap they put down
to melt ice off the road.  Unfortunately,
that's apt to still be 4-6 weeks out. But,
it's coming and I have. shinny

Just remember, here in the greater Southwest, "The Forbidden Planet" of summer starts May 31st and triple-digit temperatures in "The Valley of the Sun" last well into October.

Last summer, it was 115 degrees, every day, for 3 weeks in a row...and no, it DOES NOT cool down at night!!     To give you some perspective, it is forecast to be 90 degrees here in Chandler by THIS FRIDAY!!!

So when this occurs, many of the places still trapped deep in winter now, will once again return to the "magical" time of year come May-October!! :thumb: :1:
