Clutch Job Lubrication points
« on: March 24, 2018, 08:40:02 PM »
I’ve had some significant gear oil leaks out of the bell housing of my 2013 V7 Stone.  Fixing that now.  Decided to go ahead and replace the clutch since I am in there.   Sure enough, clutch is at wear limit of 6.5mm.

Anyway, I encountered such a greasy, oily, dusty mess in the clutch area that I cannot tell what might need lubrication when doing a clutch job.

What do the pros say?

I figure I would completely de-grease the plates the clutch bears against.

I figure I would put a very small amount of moly spline lube on the clutch plate splines and the transmission input shaft.

What about the New Cup Type assembly (19083462)?   I was thinking of putting a very small amount of moly lube in the center of the cup where the clutch push rod bears.  Maybe a smear along the edges of this cup so it can spin freely.

Anything else?  For example, should I attempt to lube the fingers of the clutch diaphragm spring?

Tips?   I do not want to put this all back together only to learn later that the pros would have done X, Y, and Z while they were in there!

I am not sure about the smallblocks, but,on the big blocks, I dont think you are supposed to lubricate any of those points. The grease will probably become an abrasive "paste" with the clutch dust it will inevitably retain, and then I would think more grinding/wear would take place.
I had the same questions , as you Swede,a few years ago, when I did a clutch job on my eldorado. I ended up sending the new 4mm clutch hub, out to a place called Rikert Engineering ,in the northeast ,to be coated with some ceramic type  dry lube coatiing, and its been great...but I have only put about 20K miles on it.
Rick.

SmithSwede,

How many miles for you to get to the wear limit on the clutch?

Sign:

A bit over 66,000 miles.  I would guess about a third of that mileage is stop and go urban traffic.

After I posted my question, I realized that my transmission input bearing was completely worn out (92201225) and the inner portion of one side of the clutch had numerous fractures.  Thus you may get more miles out of a clutch if you do not have those issues.

On the other hand, maybe you will not get more miles from a clutch because that dang input bearing will fail before the clutch.
