2014 Ram truck with 90,000 miles.  Driving up north in Wisconsin from down in Tennessee and it starts to miss.  Mechanic finds miss in number three cylinder, and then compression test shows about 20 in that cylinder.  Dang it!!!!!!!  Now its at a Ram dealership getting ready to be torn into next week.  My next truck will probably be a Nissan or Toyota.  No more Fords, Chevys, or Rams for this guy!

That's too bad...very sorry to hear this...I would have thought a Dodge truck would go a little more than 90K before calling it quits!    Obviously not...see more here:

I have a 2011 Hyundai Tucson (SUV) with a big-4 (16V DOHC) with 123,000 trouble-free miles ("knock-on-wood"), and it still runs like a top!

My old Chevy has 228K on it now. Uses no oil, runs like a top. All I've done is normal, a coil, a fuel pump, and recently an alternator. I find this common with my Chevies over the years, in both my pickups and Vans. We traveled when the kids had a bluegrass band, and we put 267k and 287 K on 2 Chevy vans. Sold a still good running Suburban with 257K on that one. I've always had my best luck with GM and it looks like it will stay that way. I have 3 boys driving Chevy trucks. Of course, if you just want to use it as a car that can haul your 4 wheeler, get a Toyota, it won't matter. I've never had a frame rot so bad on a truck only a few years old that the spare tire fell off on the road.

That's a bummer that it dropped a cylinder.  I'll be curious to hear a post-mortem from you, once it's fixed.

Wonder if the piston rings went bad, or if the cylinder head gasket did.

Is your 5.7 Hemi the "MDS" Multi-Displacement version, or the normal 5.7 Hemi?

If MDS, I wonder if it was a contributor.

Hmmm.

Its not the MDS just normal 5.7 Hemi.  They are tearing into it next week so I will know more then.

The straight 6 was more reliable.  My Chevy Silverado has strong drivetrain sidelined from electrical.  The Nissan Frontier not sure what's wrong.  Domestic or import.  You roll the dice.

I'm impressed you put 90k on it in a few years. I have a 14 Ram Van and it is just turning 22k miles. I figure at this rate, it may last me the rest of my life!

Please let us know what failed on it! Hope  they make quick and quality work of it for you.

Curious if they did a leakdown test to determine if it's in the valves or piston/headgasket. Broken valve spring on intakes has been a problem since 2011.
Cam and Lifter problems but not as common. Hope it's the least expensive route.

I dont think thats the norm for the hemi Anserson I own an 07. I personally  know of several of these with 150-200k flawless miles. A lot of factors can be involved in your issue without it being a poor product in general. Id say all the brands have their exceptions with this type of issue. Hope the best for you but I think your greatest worry is the issue of a dealership doing the repairs at 100.00 bucks an hour:(

The Nissan Frontier not sure what's wrong.

Not to hijack the thread but my Frontier is over 180,000 miles and running fine with occasional help from this forum:

http://www.clubfrontier.org/

Recently diagnosed a broken crank sensor and showed me how to fix it.
He lost the run of himself.

Earlier 5.7 Hemi had a habit of breaking valve springs ......Supposedly it was fixed well before 2014.....Japanese brand name trucks also can have problems..

Is the hemi used in PU's the same engine used in Chargers ? Our local PD is moving away from Chargers and going back to Chevrolets because of maintenance costs .

Same basic engine...... Keep in mind that GM, Ford and  Ram combined sell about 1.5 million new full size trucks every year...I believe Toyota and Nissan combined sell less than 200,000 full size trucks a year...By sheer number the US brand trucks will have more problems...

This week the dealership tears into the engine to see what is wrong.

Anybody want to play the guessing game and guess?

Symptoms....I was driving down the road when it began to miss slightly.  I pulled into a garage, they discovered cylinder #3 misfiring....they swapped out coil pack for that and cylinder #1 and no difference....cylin der three still misfiring, checked plugs and finally checked compression which was 20, in cylinder #3, so it is not good.  2014 Ram 1500 5.7 Liter Regular Hemi motor, Gasoline.

It was then towed to the dealership for further diagnosis/teardown.  Anybody want to guess and I'l post an update when I know......Winner gets nothing in cheap Guzzi fashion!!

Hopefully I'm totally wrong for your pocket books sake but here goes:
                          A)  # 3 Intake valve spring Broken
                          B)  #3 Lifter damaged/seized
                          C)   #3  cam lobe wiped because of B
                          D)   All of the above

A leak down would have told the tale, but I'll guess broken ring/scored cylinder wall.

My 2005 Ram has the V6 and 6 speed manual. 155k miles and I've only changed the oil (a lot of times).
The engine runs like new though suspension and electrical are starting to feel the miles.
Sorry about your hemi failure. I have also heard the highway patrols were giving up their Chargers, the reason being that Dodge sacrificed endurance for higher performance numbers.

my dad had 94 that did the same thing, it turned out to be a blown head gasket, dodge fixed it under warranty, the truck is now my brothers and it think is got about 220k on it.

my 94 is a Cummings, it just passed 350k, drive train is sold, rest of truck has had its issues.  Mostly, AC problems and lots of ball joints.  Its a pain to replace that evaporator or heater coil.  I know the newer trucks are all the same, but its a poor design to have to pull the dash out to replace these parts.

while you can get a lemon with any brand, I would imagine any of the big 3 or Japanese trucks are all going to be pretty reliable.
