2003 v11 sport purchase, am I nuts?
« on: April 02, 2018, 04:02:12 PM »
A old friend (80) was a sales guy at our BMW dealer and took a 03' V11 sport in on trade and wound up with it. Only has 5k one owner miles and looks perfect. Been sitting in his garage for a long time. Was over there today, he is getting rid of bikes and said I could have it for $1800. He said the engine didn't sound right to him as he recalled. Very tempted to roll the dice. Are parts available for this vintage? Beautiful bike was begging me to bring it home. Oh learned ones give me your thoughts?
Thank you,
Dean

Your friend, although familiar with Beemers, may not be ready for the sounds that a Guzzi makes..  could have been the clutch rattling.

It's a brilliant bike, and it's really a "modern" bike rather than a classic. A bargain at that price, and it's not even run in yet. Do keep in mind that those more familiar with, say, modern Japanese bikes often seem to think there is something wrong with guzzis, - "you'll need a new gearbox" is a common reaction. There are a few known minor problems with the later spine frames - check out the V11 LeMans forum for the fixes. Go for it, it's a lot of bike for even 3 times the money.

Tank is a weird green. Has a steering stabilizer, did they come with one? Anyway since it has sat for quite awhile, thinking about a resuscitation strategy. Might drop the sump, remove the rocker covers and inspect? Other suggestions welcome! It really is a wonderful looking bike!

The most sought after fast green, get it out in the sunlight and still tell me it's weird LOL.
Yes steering damper is standard

If you're not really sold on it please pass it on to someone who will take care of it.

Yes, the steering damper is standard, and that on the V11 is serviceable. The weird green is the best colour. The early versions also had a red frame. Very tasty.

If you describe a "weird green" You may be talking about a Tenni edition. Is the green a zinc chromate green? If so, VERY DESIRABLE!!!!!

The Tenni model came with two seats. a brown seat and a black seat. When you say it does not sound right, what do you mean? Valves out of adjustment? dual plate clutch rattle? Might be no trouble at all.

IF  it is a Tenni, buy it. it is worth more than that in parts to anybody that has one.

You might send some photos so we can see what this is about.

There are some very knowledgeable folks here that can help.  Most want to see another Guzzi on the road and are infatuated with barn finds.

Green 03? I don't think so. There is the 00 "Greenie" and the 02 Tenni. More than likely it's a Tenni, sold and tagged in 03. Nice bike, but single plate clutch that has to be dealt with. For $1800? Just give me the phone number..

There was a 2003 V11 with a muted green tank, close to pastel green. It's not the candy-apple green of the 2000 Red-Frame sport.

FWIW, I bought a crashed parts bike for slightly less than the price you mentioned. And when I say crashed I mean bent frame, cracked front wheel etc. Worst case scenario: the engine is wasted, then you can part it out for about $3,000 and buy a runner.

What he said..  if it is a Tenni then I guess the single plate clutch could be hatched and that's the source of the "doesn't sound right"?

If it's truly a 2003, YOU SHOULD BUY IT OR CONTACT ME, I need one like that.

Thank you all. Did notice the blistered, crinckle engine paint. I guess that indicates a rebadged 02?
