Advise on Shocks
« on: April 04, 2018, 10:59:01 AM »
I have a 2002 California stone and I was looking to replace the rear shocks, I got this from the previous owner and he said they both leaked all their oil and needed to be replaced.

I'm having a tough time finding decently priced shocks for this and wondering if anyone had any ideas as to where I could get a pair of shocks, I would consider all options but trying to keep it as friendly to my wallet and still last at the same time.

Any suggestions would be very helpful, I was really hoping around $150-200 range but that may be unrealistic so maybe $200-300 but any advice/brands/options would help out big time.

As a side note im also looking for a parts website as im starting to realize these things are a bit tough to find parts for! But im sure it mostly has to do with my ignorance to better sites. Nothing besides shocks needed atm just looking for possible future use.

Thanks!

Hagon USA. They can meet whatever you're looking for, from "equivalent to stock" to "high end".

I've never been anything but happy with Hagon's products and service.

But you're gonna be at the high end of your budget ($300+) if you want something that works. Everything in that $150 range is usually cheap chinese crap.

You might try here they are pretty good. If your going to ride a lot then I would advise you to consider a rebuildable model.

Developed from the old Konig moto shocks.

MG Cycle usually has the Ikon Basix for $200 or so.

as just mentioned these guys sell the Ikon, and most any other part you're likely to need for that new machine. Welcome. You're gonna love that bike once you get it rolling.

:1: both Hagon and Ikon.  I have both on different bikes:  Neither is a rival to Ohlins, but both do the job.  Ikons (not the Basix) have adjustable rebound damping.  Good value for money.

I got ICON Basix last season and it was a waste of money.  Cheap shocks are just that-cheap.  They will come off and I had Hagon make me a good pair-2001 Jackal.

Kingoffleece,  Did they break on you or are they just not a very good ride?  I am also around 250lbs I probably should have mentioned that as well earlier.

The Kid told me about the three dollar shovel. There was a guy that needed to bury his dog, and didn't have a shovel, so he drove 10 miles in to town to get one. There was a 3 dollar shovel and a 14 dollar shovel. Thinking he was only going to use it once, he bought the 3 dollar one. It promptly broke, so he made another 20 mile round trip and came back with the 14 dollar shovel. Now, he has 17 dollars and the expense of a 20 mile round trip wrapped up in it. Don't buy a 3 dollar shovel. <shrug>

To that I'd say... shop around... if you don't need the $14 shovel, don't bother.

Shop around and find a decent $8 shovel, without the fancy ass paintjob.

This http://www.davequinnmotorcycles.com/ Dave will ask your weight, riding style, etc and get you the appropriate set up for your shocks.

With that service I think it's a no brainer.

I'm put these Ikon's on my EV last year and I'm very pleased...I hit the scales over 250lbs

No, they didn't break.  Poor ride quality-undersprung (can be changed) but the damping was/is quite poor. I used the recommended spring rate after a conversation with the seller and I knew they were inexpensive.  I got what I deserved.  Not complaining one bit but I did feel compelled to add what information I can to the discussion.  I'd suggest anybody spend a bit more and get something better.

That said, YMMV.
