Another Convert

Oboy...bought another Convert..original(except the straight pipes..it comes with the original mufflers) ...has a little over 8K miles and is in running condition...

Previous owner is 76 years young...asked why it had straight pipes on it and he said he liked to hear his motorcycles and that the originals mufflers are nice..

Yes 1980...are the forks different also? Can't remember..

I looked at this yesterday morning. He did not want to come down on the price for me. I passed. It was run for the last year or two with no filters with the straight pipes. It looked to be leaking a bit of tranny fluid. The oil feed lines looked not too good and the front fender was smashed. Looks like it is a good candidate to be gone through thoroughly. Air box was tossed and there was no venting system. Front tire looked original.
Did you get it at a good price?
He was asking 2500 and I thought that for around that price you could find one that had many of the things fixed already.

The "true"    Converts were all short wheelbase, iirc.  The Cal II auto had the long frame and taller steering neck.  I *think* the '80 was the first year of the Cal II.  But if yours doesn't say it's a Cal II it will have the same forks as the older ones.  I can measure mine if you'd like.

 :1:, Me too! No doubt it's because of the pump-drive gremlins, which the masses don't understand can be solved fairly easily. At 8k, it's got maybe 12k miles to go until the original hex-drive rounds out in the ATF pump. Guzziology attests to this, and both my Convert and CAL II went out at about the same 25 k mileage. It's probably got the heavier machined flywheel, though, so that problem is solved. Little leakiness of the fluid lines or drippiness wouldn't scare me away, I think at 2.5K starting price as clean and complete as it is, you got a good deal!

I am also glad that you are saving a Convert. Too few of them around. The guy you bought it from was a menace to machinery.
Sometimes I think there ought to be an aptitude test before being allowed to possess a nice machine like a Guzzi, like there is for becoming a parent. There is, right?

I think the Cal II was only made from '82-'84. They were also the square engines, even the Convert Cal IIs.

I like mine. No problems so far. Zero interest in a 5 speed conversion - the auto is way too much fun and requires a whole reorientation of riding style.
