Who here knows Nova Scotia ? NGC
« on: April 08, 2018, 09:59:28 PM »
More accurately , who is familiar with the local language patterns in Nova Scotia ? Been watching
*Last Tango in Hailfax* , and while the accent isn't Midlands English , the patterns and usage are very similar to Midlands English . The drop "the" and simply say "in" , IE "in hospital" , and they also use the term "Hey up" , not something I heard while traveling in Canada .

Anyway , interesting show , humor and pathos , mixed with some grit and absurdity  :thumb:

Yeah , been doing some research , it is a BBC show , loosely based on a true story . The Halifax thing threw me , appears there is also a Halifax in the Midlands of England . That does explain the language thing

Seriously, this show has nothing to do with Halifax, Canada, which, along with the friendly people, is a great place for seafood and beer. You’ve probably been wrong before, but never this wrong. Lol!

Try using the App IMDb, to look up info on your favourite shows and actors.

Cheers! 🍻

Come on man , that takes all the fun out of stuff

As stated before , I did use google fu , but you Canucks are tricky, naming towns after inconsequential villages in England . Down here we would never name a town after Holmfirth

That's a Yorkshire dialect you heard.  A mild one at that for TV.   If it were broad Yorkshire or also known as "Tyke" no one could understand it.
It's roots are in Old English and Norse.   Lots of thees, thous and clipped words..

As I started really paying attention it did start sounding like the accents from LOTSW , at least the accents used by the main characters , Wally Batty's accent was really thick .

There are usually two accents in any area , sometimes employed by the same person . The Okie accent normally used in movies (almost identical to the Texas accent) is always an exaggeration of the way we really sound . Well , most of us anyway

Last year on a ferry from Digby Nova Scotia to New Brunswick, there were some 1% wannabees riding loud Harleys that were complaining of their experience in NS. Apparently they were speeding (possibly more) and upset some lady driving along. Not sure how they ended up in a conversation, but she made it clear she was not happy. They of course said they were model citizens...

About 50 km later (according to the three riders) they were stopped by the RCMP and given speeding tickets (possibly other infractions too). The tickets were based on the lady's complaint, and not from direct observation by the police. Didn't know that could happen, or if the police would normally bother.

Never found out if they beat it of course, but at a minimum it would have been a logistical nightmare to defend it since they were all from Ontario. Apparently as long as the lady was willing to testify, the cops were willing to charge them.

So, the moral is make sure if you go to NS to treat people politely!

Thanks Nick , the entire thing kinda confused me . The truly embarrassing part is that Halifax UK is near to Huddersfield which is of course near to Holmfirth . I should have picked up on that . At least I recognized the language similarities

Nova Scotia is a bucket list location for me. My paternal Grandmother is from Nova Scotia, actually Nova Scotian/Quebecois/First Nation. True Canadian mutt.  We've got family in Canning, off the Bay of Fundy. My folks have visited, none of my generation has gotten there yet. It falls to me.

Atlantic Canada has been my favorite M/C playground since the late 70s . English is universal ,provincial parks are great facility's and folks are generally accommodating. If ya get a chance to make the "Bluenose Rally" do so. As for the RCMP they have had a bit of an issue with gangs HA.etc. if you're polite & reasonable they aren't too draconian, they assume (probablyincorrectly) "bikers" from the states are armed .Also if you're vegan don't expect variety outside tourist areas.

It's a North American thing to name places after the birthplace of the settlers, Paris and London Ontario to name a couple.

One of the oddest namesakes has to be Florence Az, not a Duomo in site, how the flat basin of the Arizona desert has any relation to Italy is beyond me.

You know you are in the middle of nowhere when they steal names of American towns, then misspell or mispronounce them, as in Pittsburg, KS, or Miami, Ok.....

Hate to tell you this Shorty , but we pronounce Miami the right way here in Oklahoma . Named after the Miami tribe . Actually probably no one pronounces it correctly , it was likely pronounced
Me Ahm Mee

Kinda like Nacogdoches TX and Natchitoches LA . Legend has it they were named after brothers from the Alabama Coushatta tribe . Likely should be pronounced Nacodosh and Nacotosh .
Go figure  Don't even get me started on how Tulsey Town became Tulsa

I was born in Halifax. Lived for a couple years in Newfoundland, and several years in Labrador.
Old enough to say I've done it, young enough to do it again.

As some of you know, we are in Maine, just down the coast from Nova Scotia, we visit often.

This year we (Wife Sue and I) are heading up to Newfoundland in late May into early June, she wants to go up to a place called Twillingate at the very North East tip of the island to watch/photograph the Giant Icebergs float by...  Just to do it.

Should be a blast...

Photos later... in June.

My wife and I did a camping trip through Nova Scotia and NewFoundland back in the mid 90's, really want to go back, great places. We didn't have time to make it to twillingate.
