V7 Stone 2013 Oil Level?

Just finished the complete 600 mile service on a lightly used Stone I purchase last week.

I drained the oil, both drains, replaced the oil filter and filled it precisely with 2 liters of very expensive Motul 10W-60 fluid.

Ran the bike and checked the level with the dip stick, not screwed in and bike level, and the oil comes to the top of the hatch marks (#3) on the stick. 

Is this high?  I’m sure I got all the oil out as I let it drain for 30 min.

Or, are the two bulges - the one on the bottom of the dip stick (#1) and the other one 1/2” up (#2) the min/max fill lines.

In my dealings with my 2013 Stone, yes that is too high.   The excess oil will get blown into the air box and then into the intake track, making a huge mess.   

I have studied this pretty carefully. 

They do not really take 2 liters.   It is really more like 1.7 liters with a new oil filter.

Engine oil expands considerably when it gets hot, so there is a big difference between checking the oil level when cold versus hot.  Hot oil will expand a distance of about 1/2 way between the LOW and FULL marks.   The Guzzi dipstick is graduated for hot oil. 

My practice has been to fill the crankcase with fresh oil until the level is about 2mm above the LOW mark when cold (#1 in your photo).  Then when it is hot and at running temperature, the oil level will be a bit higher than the half way mark (your #2).   My bike does not blow oil into the air box when set at this level, but will if I add more. 

Note that it can be difficult to get consistent readings on the dipstick since it come into the crankcase at such an angle, and it is easy to dip the stick down too low upon insertion and get a false reading.

I keep the stick held high up on insertion and high and dry.   Then I carefully lower it while rotating it, so that I can just begin to seat into the threads.  Then unscrew while raising again.   

Your bike may behave differently than mine and tolerate a higher oil level.   Maybe just run it 500 miles and let it puke out what it considers to be excess.   Be sure to get it good and hot on an extended freeway run at high speeds and high revs.   Then record the resulting dipstick level as the level your engine likes, and clean up the air box.

Definitely do not assume the engine is burning oil and keep adding oil to keep the reading at the FULL level.

The "Full" level is no. 2. As SS says, that's for hot oil. As he also says, 2 litres is too much - I re-fill the 2014 1TB with 1.9 L - otherwise the airbox gets a lot of oil in it, enough to coat the filter as well. Experiment with yours -  1.7, 1.8, 1.9, to see which is the most you can add while still leaving the airbox dry after a decent run. Note that the 2TB works fine on 1.7 litre.

I think I’ll extract 250 cc’s with a large syringe and then note the new height on the dipstick, both hot and cold, in the unscrewed position.

That will leave me with 1.75 liters in the engine. 

Just a little extra to be safe.

I have never measured oil in the engine on any Guzzi or my Jeeps, always 1/2 Qt/L short then run & warm up engine & top off where I like it to be.

1.6 L without a new filter is as full as you want to go. .1 for the filter.
