Ever wondered why Cali 1400’s are so heavy?
« on: May 02, 2018, 02:12:07 AM »
We did a rough calculation of what all the extraneous munt associated with the rubber mounting of the motor today.

Dunno how to organise a poll but let’s have a guessing comp!

How much does all that shite actually weigh?  :D

I'd say it's a fair bit - but nothing compared to the weight of the final drive / swingarm compared to a CARC!

Looking my California over last night while installing the new battery....yeah.  I'd agree that 45-50lbs looks about right.

OK. Keep going. You wouldn’t believe the crap they put on ostensibly to get it to vibrate like a sex aid at idle because .”That’s what big cruisers should do”!

It’s insane! The G14 is as smooth as smooth can be, single spark, no rubber mounts, just a reality check!

Heim joints, huge rubber donut bushings in alloy braces big enough to shock absorb the loading of a Saturn V launch, (OK, maybe that was an exaggeration.) never mind all the fixings and brackets!

Mad!

I don't believe the CARC design is all that heavy.  If you've removed the swingarm to grease the pivot bearings, you'd note that the swingarm housing itself is surprisingly lightweight.  The final drive itself may have a few more components (component  supporting the pinion gear and the radius rod itself.  Correct me if I'm wrong.

20kgs is shooting in the dark

I had lifted a 8V engine + transmission before, it felt like the weight of a full grown (Asian ) man and needed two persons to do it

to keep this lump suspended, I guess it needs some really beefy rigs

Just as a point of reference the Harley Sportster gained 50# (mostly in the frame) when they rubbermounted it.

I had forgotten how much the Sportsters went up in weight when they rubber mounted them.  In that case the Cali is probably at least 80-90lbs.

I'll guess 70 lbs, I know the frame is like a Goldwing from the 80's, more stuff = more tabs, then covers cause it's ugly.

82 to 86 lbs  or 37 to39 kg is my guess but it's only a guess , after thinking about it. Seems a little extreme but I'm thinking of the pile of associated parts on the scale

When they were changing my tires, I picked up the wheels.  With fresh tires mounted, I think the rear wheel and tire weigh about 50 lbs by themselves and the front at least 30.  There is also a very stout looking cross brace on the rear swing arm.
I personally like the weight especially on the highway as it keeps the bike steady down the road.  As others have noted, pushing it around is a little bit of a challenge.  Also, a Road King weighs 750 lb compared to the Cali Custom's 700.  And, by putting on Ago pipes, I dumped about 20 lbs so Blu is supermodel svelte...

According to Harley-Davidson, the curb weight on a 2018 Road King is 836 lb
The 2016 year model weighs in at 814 lbs.

A 2018 Heritage Classic is 723
A 2016 Heritage Classic is 755

We currently own a Heritage and have owned three Road Kings.  In my mind, this Cali 1400 is easier for me to push around the garage that either of our Heritage or Road Kings.  Not enough miles on it yet, but I'm leaning toward it also being a bit more maneuverable and easier to handle than that Heritage, and certainly easier than a Road King.

Right now, I'm trying to figure out them goofy handlebars.

I wasn't going to wade into this cause it's a potential rabbit hole, but yeah we gotta compare apples-with-apples.

Wet weights (as best as I can tell according to various sources) are :

Audace (a paltry) 659#
Cali 1400 Custom 701#
Eldo 1400 738#
Cali 1400 T 753#

my 2016 RK (Police): 821#
2018 RK: 826#
2018 Heritage: 723# (107 motor)/728# (114 motor)
2018 Sport Glide: 698#

Anyway, my current RK is a bear to walk but that's specifically because of the huge saddle. I mean where the civilian model has a 28" seat height my Police model has a 31" seat height. Take that height away and a lot changes.

I don't recall the Cali 1400 feeling much smaller or easier to push around than the civilian RK.

That said, if you haven't already, you GOTTA ride the 2018 Heritage. It feels MUCH smaller and lighter than the previous model did and also feels smaller/lighter than any Cali 1400 variant I've ridden.

I kinda think they were complete morons to reuse the names of old Dyna and Softail models on this new line because it is SO different than both of those (moreso than any other new Harley "models" in the decades I've been riding them).

With its long wheelbase, once it gets moving, it not bad to manage at all  However, with no reserve gear, I always "back it in" on sloped surfaces / parking places!

I'll bite - if 50kg can be trimmed from the Platic Maggot (the 200kg CX500), even if that included swapping out the muffler & wheels as well, then there's a decent chance of 50kg of unnecessary stuff on the B-Double.

Purchased a 2018 Heritage 114 a few weeks ago, what a sweet ride, so much better than the old Heritage and a little better than the RK in my opinion due to weight and size. The suspension, the handling, the brakes all well done, also very responsive when applying power and i haven't scraped floor boards yet, I'm sure that will happen on some mountain roads. I'm a very happy with it and the olive and black colors work really well with the blackout look.

IMHO, the real weight gain is when the manufacturer has to stiffen the frame due to the removal of the engine as a stressed member.  When BMW went to rubber mounts on their 4 cylinder K bikes in 1998, they gained about 50 pounds.  The Harley Sportster gained about 50 pounds when they were rubber mounted in 2004.  Is the 1400 frame being weighed to compare it to a Stelvio frame?
