Red Triangle/Service! warning Breva 1100
« on: June 15, 2018, 10:33:42 AM »
Hi,

The other day I got caught in a downpour and shut bike down once i got to my destination. A few hours later started the bike and a Red Triangle/Service! warning appeared on the dash of my Breva 1100. Parked the bike in the garage and that evening the warnings went away. There was and has never been and evidence of moisture build up where you could actually see it in the dash. I read somewhere it could possibly have been the speed sensor got wet and tossed the code?

Where should I go from here?

Thanks

In the case of dashes getting moisture build up, I'm thinking it would not be a result of heavy rain riding.
Something probably did get a bit of rain into it and lit the triangle.  Possibly some external switch or sensor.  Maybe give the sidestand switch a checking?
If the light is out, just go ride..

You might want to:
Get into the diagnostics screens on your dash and see if it held any sort of code?  There will be two areas for codes.  ECU and Dash.
The code to get into the diagnostic screens on my Breva 1100 was 36421.

That happened on the Kid's Grease O. There was a fix for that. Don't know if they are the same, though.

Yup, sounds like water in the speedo sensor/ or their connection/s too to me. ABS or non ABS model.

Hi Pete,

Non-ABS model. Is there anything I can do to perhaps prevent this from happening agian?

Thanks, Brian

Hi,

Bike is now dry and warning triangle went away. Have since put a 100 or so miles on it.

This morning I checked both the ECU and Dash for codes and all was clear.

Thanks, Brian

My 2008 1200 Sport will infrequently present the red triangle symbol once I (a) turn on the ignition (b) permit the dash to go thru its start up routine of analog needles moving (but before I hit the starter button.)  In my case, I believe it is a defective oil pressure sensor that must be stuck in the wrong position.  I really need to break down and replace it.

This begs the question.  Can anyone describe the sequence performed by the ECU prior to hitting the starter button?  What sensors are being checked, and in what order?  And if not the oil pressure sensor, what other sensors might 'light up' the triangle prior to actual engine startup?

Thanks,

Bob

My '06 Breva1100 also has this problem.  Occasionally the red service light comes on for no apparent reason.  The first time it happened, it freaked me out because I was 2 days out on a week long trip.   I cycled through  the start up process and it disappeared.  Didn't happen again on that trip.  Now it happens from time to time.  I cycle trough the start up and, again, it goes away.  I spoke with my dealer, Jim Hamlin, about it.  He said it was "a Guzzi thing," and not to worry.  So I don't.  Once the light disappears, the bike runs as per usual.  Since don't like that it happens, though.  I don't like red lights on the dash.

My Norge started doing that at about 40,000 k's.
Suspecting it was the oil sensor about to go arse up, I took the bike out, and at 100 or so kph, turned off the key, waited a few seconds and turned it back on WITHOUT HOLDING ANY THROTTLE ON...!
(I only did that once..)
The light disappeared, whether it shocked the sensor back into life or not, I don't know, but the problem stayed away for ages...

THE RED TRIANGLE: Mine shows that every once in a while. I let the engine warm up, then shut it off and start again. Sometimes it goes out. if not I ride the bike for a short distance to the first stop, and stop and start it again. that will always reset it.

Check your dashboard for historic errors.  I reckon you will find a DSB07 (Oil Sensor Fault), and perhaps a DSB08 (Oil Pressure Fault).

The culprit is likely to be the oil pressure sender.  Replacement is the only cure.

All of the sensors will be checked during start up. How the dash and ecu react depends on the sensor involved. Things like the speedo sensor will be checked and if there is a problem it'll throw a code and warning. The oil pressure switch is a 'Normally Closed' switch so it has continuity with the engine off. So as long as it does have continuity the dash will do its sweep and see everything is OK and then the light will go out.

The problem with the oil switches is that they may either fail *Open* so there is no continuity in which case thedash recognises a problem and illuminates a warning before the engine is started or, the switch remains closed after the engine is started and the dash therefore thinks that there is no oil pressure. It's in this case that you'll get the triangle of death and the dirty great oil can symbol?

There is absolutely no question that the switches Guzzi have used since the time of the Nuovo Falcone have been the absolute apogee of crappiness! Why it is that every other manufacturer on the planet can source cheap, reliable switches and Guzzi keep buying them from 'Shitty Switches 'R' Us' is something I long ago stopped dwelling upon as going there is a route to madness and despair!

They also, helpfully, on the 8V's decided to change the switch fittings and thread pitch, (But not the abysmal quality!) twice during production. The second time necessitating the use of an anaphoric block that is so huge that it sometimes interferes with the alternator! It's enragingly stupid! Luckily there are aftermarket switches that will fit, just, that work just fine.

With the Breva speedo error problem? On the non ABS Brevas the sensor is on the front fork on, I believe, the RHS. Check it carefully, especially where the cable joins the sensor body itself. While the problem is more common with early Grisos which use a different sensor at the back of the bike the problem is that the insulation can crack at the point the cable enters the sensor. When this occurs you get water ingress when it's raining or if the bike is washed and the sensor has a little sook and stops working. Result? Red triangle of death and 'Service' on the dash.

Unbolt the sensor and pull it out, dry it thoroughly with yer missus hair drier and then seal around the cable entry point with silastic or the like. Reinstall when cured and keep your fingers crossed. :thumb:

Thanks for the explanation, Pete.  You pose an even better question '.... why does Guzzi source such crappy sensors ....?'

Regards.
