Leaking crankshaft seal

The Centauro motor I put together this spring runs well, but the lip seal on the crankshaft behind the alternator leaks.  Any thoughts on what I did wrong?

Why do you think you did something wrong?  I use tape over keyways & threads or anything that might damage it on instillation.
Didn't leak right away did it?

There's an O-ring inside the part#8, the sleeve isn't there? Was that replaced and lubed as it went in/on? Also the front seal should be a directional Viton one I believe? If a Nitrile one was substituted it won't of lasted long due to the heat.

I think the seal rides on #8 and in the pic oring is on the wrong side of it.

I replaced the lip seal, but reused the o ring because it seemed to be ok.  Have there been any reports of poor quality seals?  I don’t like to just replace parts without knowing what caused the failure - that usually leads to repetition of the same mistake.

O rings are usually deformed to some degree in regular service.  I always replace them with new  when things are apart.  Mike

I use the Viton(brown) seals if they have them in that size and always new orings.

I have not put one in a Daytona, I was just explaining that I use them if I can get them.
You may want to call MG and see if they can get them.

What size is it? While you may not easily be able to get a directional one from a bearing factor I'm sure you can pick up a standard Viton seal and O-Ring from there. Canberra isn't a big town, somewhere between 400-450,000 souls, but our local suppliers always seem to be able to get me most things I need within a day or so.
