Petes advise is right on of course and mine too I believe. the screen protects the pump and the filter protects the mains. If the pump is coming apart, you'll see it in the filter and the relief valve. the relief valve could have a chunk in it holding it open so its important to check that as long as you're this far into it. Any progress to report?

Dusty, here's a test rig I made up at great expense using a piece of garden hose  to check out the pressure relief valve. If it doesn't seat for whatever reason you won't have much oil pressure.
This is from the Aero engine build page 12, about half way down.

heat index is 105 here today, you must have gotten old, Dusty. I've made at least three trips from the air conditioned house to the air conditioned shop and it doesn't seem so bad out there.

So you're gonna bring that climate controlled shop down here so I might employ it ?

Update?

Sorry , been busy , hopefully by tomorrow evening . I tend to not form any preconceived ideas about what might be wrong in these situations , it keeps me from missing what the problem is . Just hoping at this point it isn't anything worse than an oil pump .

I'd think a smart guy like you would see the obvious....wheel the Guzzi into the cool house to work on it! You're welcome.  :thumb:

hell, he's been laying around in the air conditioning all day and is afraid to go outside cause it mite be warm! too lazy to bring the bike inside as has been wisely suggested, while we are patiently waiting, unable to help except for making helpful observations :whip2:

Just to inspire you, Dusty, that just happened to me, sort of.

I was going through Ken's Coca-Cola bike (#106 if you care), doing the stuff you do when the bike has sat a couple years without stuff having been done.  In the course of that I dropped the pan, filled the filter, etc.  Upon turning the engine over the oil pressure light stayed on.  I popped a valve cover and didn't see the new, red-tinted oil anywhere.  I pulled the plugs and spun the engine for as long as I like to spin the starter with no joy.

I'm used to my engines getting pressure up at or before ignition.  So this wouldn't do.  I drained the oil and pulled the pan -- no mistakes.  The gasket was good and the filter was tight.  I tapped on the pressure relief valve and it answered with a definite click.  I disassembled it and decided that it had dried out and simply hung up.  So I dipped the bits in oil, reversed the procedure and spun the engine again.  Pressure was up and oil was flinging from the valve gear almost immediately.  It has acted normally since.

The majority of the time was spent getting the sump off and on.  The best part was the beer didn't have time to get warm in the 100+ heat inside the shop.  You can do it too!  Except for the beer.  Use better beer than I did.  You'll thank me later.

Did you find the trouble? sometimes when I look for a problem I cant find what it was but it fixes itself. Maybe a chunk of crud stuck in the relief valve and you dislodged it without seeing it. it might also be too hot to fool with it so I was curious if you were able to make any progress

There probably hasn't been enough oil through the PRV to keep it from rusting, and It's stuck..
