Old Moto Guzzi ads
« on: July 12, 2018, 04:32:06 AM »
I love old motorcycle ads and prints.  There are a surprising number of Moto Guzzi ads floating around the internet from the 50's 60's and 70's.  The "longlegged" ads are a lot like the Norton girl campaign but others have some beautiful artwork.

Thanks for posting these. What's the story on the Long-Legged? I've seen that on other models as well (the SP1000). What's that referring to?

I've heard that term applied to Guzzis for years. I always took it as a reference to their endurance and their well known ability to run wide open all day.

That's a K-model Harley there, not any kind of Guzzi ... Wonder why it was included in this otherwise all-Guzzi line-up?    Must have been an oversight ....

Whoops!  I glanced at the engine(my focus was elsewhere on the ad) and the crashbar looked like a V-twin Guzzi sticking out.

Cool topic!  Here's some more.  First one was in a case at Guzzi Retro:

BTW - the way I've understood long legged (not just Guzzis) is geared relatively high for easy cruising at highway speeds.  Not buzzy or frantic.

I thought it might have been that "focus" problem!

I have a poster sized one of this hanging in my bedroom and the flip side is in the shop.

Those are beautiful  :thumb:  They could make a bike just like the Eldo or Amb today with V7 or V9 motor and it would sell!

If it could be produced at a low enough price point it might fit in well with the "hipster" movement. But to do that it would have to be affordable to young people.
And...through young eyes from a mid 20 year old in the very early 80s perspective, my first exposure to Moto Guzzi was an Ambassador and my first thoughts were what an old fashioned and stodgy looking motorcycle.

Famous and very successful racing model 500 single from the late 40's was named "Gambalunga", Italian for "long legs". Actually referred to the long stroke engine it used.

It means a bike that will take ypu long distances at high speed and not tire you in doing so.  Not buzzy or frantic, as described above.  For Guzzis in particular the expression also goes back to race bike model names like Gambalunga (which translates directly to Long Legged) and Gambalungino (Little Long Legs)

Loving the Get More Out of Life poster

Id agree, if I could find a poster size version of that, there is a spot for it in my garage.
Great thread, great ads but Im pretty sure the long legs most readers were thinking of
were a little closer to the bike portrayed....:).  As a practitioner in the black arts of marketing
thats always a danger, you remember the beautiful attention getting girl but not the brand.
At least in this case is was in service of strategy, and a lovely service at that.

That's actually not an old ad.  This artist makes some pretty cool vintage style posters that you can purchase.  That is one of them.  There's another Guzzi one titled "Hell Is The Destination" that I really like.  Here's a link to the artist's site in case anyone is interested.   http://aristocraticmotorcyclist.tumblr.com/
