Author Topic: Doing a Fly & Ride, Need help with route planning (Read 4165 times)

I bought a baby Breva and I am going to ride her home to Florida. I need route recommendations as I am unfamiliar with a lot of the east coast and I have a week so if I anyone would like to meet up along the way and possibly even wants to ride together a ways as long as it's in the right general direction, that would be great.
Initially I will leave from the Rochester area and head to Danbury Ct. on the morning of Oct 8th. I was planning on going Rt 20 across most of NY unless there is a better route.
One day in Ct with my sisters and leave on the 10th to head south. I am wanting to avoid most all major cities if possible and freeways, but some are OK if necessary. So I am planing on heading I84 west till I just cross over into Pennsylvania and take 209 all the way south to the Susquehanna river and rt 147 south 8-10 miles to a bridge at Duncannon. I will probably loosely follow the general direction of I81.

That's all I got so far, but I will be researching this all week.
I had looked at Skyline drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway but the speed limit is too low and I have heard it is heavily patrolled. If I had a lot more time I might do it for a nice slow scenic ride.

US20, US209 and PA147 are all good ideas, I enjoy them. Look at VA 42, US340, US 15 (south of Gainesville VA) after that ....

Yes 15 south from Harrisburg to Frederick then 340 to 211 and west over the mountains then 42 south looks good. Thanks

US 301 will carry you from Delaware to Florida. Although it isn't Interstate, traffic and speed may be higher than you want.

209 in NYS is mostly lovely, but littered w/over populated small towns and commerce. 209 (Port Jervis South in PA, is deer infested and slow. It's worse (slower), during tourist season.

Big trucks rule ALL PA highways in ALL lanes, with the States' blessing. Should that cause questions for you perhaps an Interstate would be more comfortable. Of course if it's night time and you can keep up; drafting is an option and saves fuel.

You'll be running, essentially, South with the Allegheny mountains. Weather alone may make choices for you.
Once you get South of Metro DC area the choice of roads will improve immeasurably.

Again: In the off season you can make good time and not get in trouble on the Blue Ridge Pkwy. There are plenty of exits and get backs if you need fuel/food or lodging. Good fortune R3~

209 takes you through the Delaware Water Gap and Coal Country, and I recommend it. If possible grab on to NY 23 and cruise on the way down to pick up 209 near Red Hook. Or take a chance on some of the scenic routes, one of which will take you to Hughes Bultaco.

In Virginia, south of Dayton there are options like 42 which also may allow side trips as you wend southward. I liked Paint Bank-and I've stayed many times at Mountain Lake Lodge (where a lot of the movie "Dirty Dancing was filmed-great food every time I've stayed there).

You're getting into the weather time of year. Watch the higher elevations for snow and the bottoms for fog. Otherwise I'm a big fan of wandering in the general direction of my destination until it finally happens.
Don't be afraid of taking the long way home. That's where the adventures happen.

You bought Joe's bike? 390 to 17, cross the river at Newburg, on straight onto 84 in CT. Stop in Alpilachin (just before Binghamton) at the Big Dipper BBQ. You'll see it from 17. Gas is there, too. EZ on and off.

A lot of good suggestions. I have been google mapping them and dragging the route to exactly what I want and then when I send it to my iphone and click on the link it reverts back to the original suggested route and not my customized one. Google maps sucks.

Google Maps doesn't need to be sent-assuming you use the same account for both devices.

If not there are other ways but it isn't so much sent as downloaded.

If the bike hasn't been used hard or for long trips keep a very close eye on the oil level. Before you set off and at least every fuel fill, I'd do it earlier, it's not hard. If it decides to do the 'Drink the sump' trick you need to catch it early.

antmanbee: Glazed cylinder walls. Rings not seated w/ cylinder wall surfaces = blow-by. Oftentimes evident as white smoke from exhausts. Fouled spark plugs if running at low engine speeds. Hone cylinders. Replace rings. Ride it like you stole it. R3~

I think that I'd stay up a few days in New England and Maine during the foliage season. Ride to Vermont and New Hampshire to the Maine coast during mid Oct. There's a reasonable motel resort in Ongunquit. Vermont is a little more difficult on the weekend.

Then you can ride on down through the Smokey's and the Dragon on the way back.

You will be traveling in the deer capital of the world, during the time of year they are most active and unattentive. Back roads are fun up there, but packed with the the buggers. Be careful and have a wonderful ride! Take photos!

Hamlin's Cycle is just outside Danbury in Bethel, CT. Stop there and have Jim service or check it out before the long ride?

This is what I did in 2014.

At some point I would get up on Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Not sure how the east side of the mountains will be in North Carolina after the Hurricane.

7 isn't bad there most of the way. 22 is a great road but let me know how this route works for you.
