Inexpensive norton on Baltimore CL
« on: October 02, 2018, 06:54:38 AM »
I've always thought that these Norton Commando's are a nice package. This one Could be the starting point of a restoration.

Because The Fates are protecting you from being taken in by a scam, which this one is.

He should have said $2500, he'd have reeled in more bunnies.   At $1000, it just glares out ....

Oohhhh  geees, maybe I shouldn't have given him credit card number and address.  He said he would deliver it to my home (in Okla).

Too bad it's a scam. A '72 Roadster should have a disc front brake. May have been converted from a Hi-rider model. They still had drum front brakes til '73. Black cylinders on a 750 may indicate a Combat motor.

You just never know, an acquaintance of mine picked up a 74 or 75 850 Commando with 14,000 miles on it for the princely sum of $1000.00 CDN. They are out there, but so are scammers too.  DonG

The parts are worth a thousand bucks. Cylinder color means nothing. I painted my '71 cylinders black when I replaced the slotted pistons in '73. For someone in the area this is the ticket. Show up hand them the cash and haul it away.

I paid $3500 for an all original 4200 mile barn find and considered myself lucky. Another $700 to get it fully ready to ride. Original paint is almost flawless, original seat, pipes, etc.

I don't think I'd buy a classic unless I could lay eyes on it first. You just can't tell with these old bikes, pictures can lie.

Got my 77 Lemans for $2500. Non running but all original. Had my BIL go and take pictures first before putting the money down.

No way a bike looks like that though and is offered up for only $1000.

Unlike most scammers the text of the ad seemed to be written well.

They sure are a proper looking motorbike.

You're right, anybody can paint cylinders black. However, from the factory, regular 750 Commando engines' cylinders were silver. Combat engines, which had higher compression, a hotter cam, and 32mm Amals instead of the stock 30's, came from the factory with black cylinders. I bought a '73 Roadster when I lived in England that had a Combat engine in it. Main bearings were toast at 4K miles. The fix was to install Superblend bearings which had barrel shaped rollers that would tolerate the flexing crankshaft.
