The wheel shaped lever is always down for gear down and up for wheels up on the fancy airplanes that have disappearing wheels. But as long as you get it to operate what does it matter, you are the one using it. Every time I get these hecklers offering their suggestions I just ask them how they oriented the one on the one that they built and it usually shuts them right up.

Think of a common light switch. Rule of thumb is switch down is off, switch up is on. The idea is if the spring fails or in this case you hit a bump, you don't want to accidently turn it on which might happen if down was on.

There is not option for rotary switch.

I don't know what kind of bump could flick a 40yo hd dpdt quality switch. These are very positive make and break switches. Not audio easy toggles.Actually the Guzzi content is it came from the dash on one of my Converts. It was made in Mexico in 1976.A well made switch.I guess the Italians did not make these back then.Thank goodness.

Ok, most people really don't care how YOU actuate the gizmo YOU built. I voted down for down because that is the way it *should* be..  but as long as the operator knows which way it is actuated, it'll be good.

Ok, I get that, but I designed industrial machinery for40 years and always had to keep in mind how the operators would perceive my layouts. You would not design a car with the gas pedal to the LEFT of the brake pedal for instance.I built mine with the bat down for centerstand down which was logical to me. The few voters all agreed with that. Thanks for the input. My best friend who has a background in industrial design said I had it wrong so being open minded I started this poll.As you well know being a pilot. controls need to be intuiative or they can be dangerous.

One thing for sure, I would wire it , up or down, so it only extended in neutral or something like that.

Good point.
That would be nice, but there is no neutral. It has a cvt drive. The switch is in the glove box so a inadvert activation is omitted.A speed sensor on the rear wheel would work but the risk benefit ratio doesnt work for me. When I made the Landing Gear for Gold wings ten years ago I had a rear wheel speed sensor. But my controls were all digital which can be dodgy sometimes.

The reason foot controls on trucks and cars are standardized was that in WW1 there were so many vehicles flooding to the front from many manufacturers around the world it was so that anybody could drive them once they learned the basic orientation. I vote toggle down, stand down. Your poll question is confusing, that is the reason I did not vote there. OK, I reread it a couple times and assume you are starting with the stand stowed and are asking which direction the switch is to be thrown for the desired operation, stand down.

I'll go out on a limb here and say this, switch up, stand up. Switch down, stand down. Just curious as to your friend's engineering logic(oximoron) that your placement would be wrong?

To avoid confusion, I'd go with something a little more flush with a symbol - up or down, then it sort of doesn't matter, but in this case the red circle (down) would indicate off (parked) which could mean kick stand deployed.

I did not respond to the poll because, in my opinion, you have missed an opportunity for a safer option: A momentary switch.
