where to buy tires online
« on: October 14, 2018, 07:32:34 PM »
Ok I did the search out here and came up with lots of brand recommendations but not too many where to buy recommendations. Most of my old links are dead. I guess it's been awhile since I last bought tires. I know a few i've used, Motorcycle superstore now JP Cycles, Ron Ayers, and American Moto Tire are still active but many are gone. Any new places out there to price tires at. No local stores and the independent that mounts mine doesn't sell.

I buy all of my tires from American Motorcycle Tire (other than the Duro HF308s for my V700 project).

How about e-bay? I bought my last 3 online, they tell you delivery dates and offer free shipping. Hope this helps.

Be careful buying tires on line, make sure your getting fairly fresh rubber.

As guzzi4me posted just before you, AMT's tires are always "fresh". I've yet to get one more than a year old.

I have used Leather Up, for 4-5 years now.
I buy Shinkos, and they seem to have the best prices with the continuous 10% off campaign.
The tires arrive within a few days, and they are fresh.

I have never bought tyres on line but perhaps I should.
Does it seem like a better way to go ?

Probably most (?) people need workshop service to mount the tires on the wheels.  Typically the mounting cost is high if the tires weren't bought at the store. Of course if you have a tire machine and mount your own, no issue.

I buy a lot of parts on line, so much that they neighbors laugh at all the packages being dropped off, but I usually buy my tires from a local shop that gives me a pretty good deal, and pay $20 each for mounting and balancing.  That works OK for me.

I just ordered a tire from BikeBandit, though I usually get tires from AMT or Dennis Kirk. Ordered yesterday, so will see how long it takes to get and how old it is.

I just wonder how you can expect the shop to stay afloat if you keep giving it to them up the blurter...!

Last sentence of my post

"No local stores and the independent that mounts mine doesn't sell."

I expect them to stay in business by giving them my mounting business (which they do charge for). I could probably buy an old Honda or Kawasaki for them to work on, (they do repair work on the big 4) but I like my Guzzis, which they don't do service on.

I change a lot of tires.  Because I have a lot of friends.  Because I have a tire changer.  You bring me the bike and the tire.  Or the wheel and the tire.

I WILL order tires for my "regular" friends, and have had the fastest shipping from Dennis Kirk .

I buy all my tires from FortNine.

Hell, I buy damn near everything from Fortnine now. Service is fantastic, inventory is great, shipping is quick and prices are wonderful.

The only local shop in my area charges $100 PER TIRE for mounting.

So, yeah, the local shop can kiss my ass.

I buy rubber online, mount and balance them myself. Purchase of the truing/balancing stand was paid for in one tire change.

If you're near a Cycle Gear, you pull your wheels and take them in, they'll sell you the tires mounted and balanced at mail order prices & $20 per wheel.

That's the cheapest I've found in my area.

The last set of tires I bought this year I bought from the local Duc speed shop.  He pulled the wheels off the bike, mounted and balanced the tires for free but I did pay full price.

For some reason the Cycle Gear stores in the Chicago area do not mount tires.

Excellent information!  I miss Motorcycle Superstore.  Great prices and next day shipping that seemed to go away after their acquisition from JP?  Felt like I got hosed by the local shop for buying a Metzeler Marathon rear for the Guzzi from them for over $200 + their $25 mounting fee.  I do feel that their mount and balance fees are reasonable, however.  I'll have to hit up the local Cycle Gear and check on that!

Me, three. I've never gotten an old tire from them.. and it's about always 2 days delivery. That they are as inexpensive as any I've seen is a bonus.

About 18? years ago I had the local triumph dealer mount a set of tires on my 1000S which they scraped up in the process of mounting the tires, and it took me some time to sand and polish them out.  I decided that I might as well mount the tires myself if I'm going to polish out scratches, so I learned how to do it myself.
