Incorrect Sir. 1978 Hailwood raced a 900 and won
https://www.motorcycleclassics.com/mike-hailwood-ducati-isle-of-man-tt-steve-wynne
1972 Smart raced a 750 at Imola

Both won

Right. Both raced and won on Ducatis. Neither raced a Moto Guzzi though.

Hailwood apparently toyed with the possibility in the early 70s, but I think when these photos were taken he had already moved on to cars - those aren't leathers he's wearing.   Love the footwear.

Mike the bikes testing of the V7 Sport was chronicled in Classic Bike a few years back he was in Italy testing a Ferrari and a magazine editor askd if he would ride the GUZZI. Mike had his race car suit and street shoes. Mike said it was the best handling street bike he ever rode.

Yes , but how was what I said incorrect ?

One thing no one ever mentions is that Hailwood's Ducati actually broke right as he crossed the start/finish line . If the race had been much longer John Williams would have won on a Honda .

If enough people suddenly decide a CB 250 Honda is worth ten large, then it suddenly is..!
I believe this says it all.  Perceived value is the name of the game.  Sort of like why is a Guzzi 1000S worth more than any other Guzzi?  Or a BMW R90S worth that much more than a BMW R100S?  Dellortos and different paint?  Spare me!

The moment I laid eyes on the green frame 1000S I thought it was the best looking Guzzi ever.  I still think it is. After one hour on it I knew it wasn't for me.   Is it time to pick 5 of the top favorite Guzzi's and take a poll?

In 1973 ,the best handling new rgular production  bikes, in no particular order were Triumph, Norton, Ducati and Moto Guzzi V7

   Cook Nielson and his Ducati....

As much as I dig the GT (and SD's) if it was 1973 and wanted to get from Los Angeles to New York quick smart on something that would eat the miles (without bits falling off) it would have been a Z1.

My choice for that job in 1973 would have been a Boeing 727.  At the west coast end where the roads are twisty I’d have had a Ducati.  At the east coast end where there was no ZDS or Woods Motor Shop, I’d have had a V7 Sport (and Berliner HQ).  The British stuff would have been sold in 1970!

These are going for stratospheric prices now as well.   $20k+.  I think about 1/3 the value is the pipes.
I don't know why I'm not worth more; old, limited edition, frozen bearings, rusty pipes, peeling paint, a tendency to wet sump and I don't run well on unleaded.

I though it was because they couldn’t afford him? Urban myth or did Ducati have deeper pockets? Seems to me Paul Smart gave them a big boost & he got slapped on the bike... hence my urban myth qu.

I think it was Tonti that was quoted in Greg Fields book as saying he couldn't get to it.

un

I raced a friend from a roll off at 20 MPH in high gear. On a long flat stretch of farmland road: me on my 72 Super Glide and against his Z1. I pulled away from him big time until about 65 MPH and then he came flying by me and was a dot in distance moments after passing me. I think he said he shut it down at 120 as it was still climbing.

Yes, very right . It was in 1971 and he also tested Fantic moped in the mean (commercial) time .I must have some pictures . But in those days , he had not tested yet the new twin Ducati cycle part.
V7 sport were expensive bikes , in the league of the Z1. 750S Duke was way cheaper. To compare 750S with V7 sport is not that fair for that reason.
About the mad prices of old Ducati (especially 750 GT/S/SS and 900SS) , rarity for sure and also the fact they are the very last real classic bikes produced .
Unpractical , sometime less reliable , less comfortable, ... , but so rewarding , so beautiful , so unreasonable , just difficult not to fall in love for a petrolhead.
And do I need to speak about the sound of Contis ?
