Oh yes! The Riedel Imme! Norbert Riedel was the Engineer who made the 2 cylinder two-stroke boxer starter engine for the Jumo turbines of the Messerschmitt Me 262 (yes, there were two strokes built into the front of the engine housings!). He was a good engineer, not so much a businessman.
Unfortunately they had to be started manually with a recoil starter. My late friend Hans Busch was a test pilot for the 262 toward the end of the war and told the story of having a flame out on one engine during the run-up before take off, having to get out of the plane, pull the recoil starter, get back in and get the engine running again. Onward into the wild blue yonder. Exciting times.Jürgen
That´s the funny thing! There is the most advanced aeroplane of the time and you have it to start the same way I had to do back in time with our Glasspar Lido boat with its two 18 hp Evinrude Fastwins.
Not the same thing ....... but have you seen old video of a squadron of ME-109s scrambling? The ground crew of each plane is seen cranking an inertia starter up to speed before it can be engaged to the DB engine to start.
